1904 Schoolhouse totals....New horizons beckon

The old schoolhouse has now been relegated to "standby" status. I'll only go there when I've no "new" places to go, or if I want to look specifically for gold rings and nickels.

I will always have fond memories of the 12 days I spent hunting there. I first stepped onto the lot on 10-28 and hit it pretty much daily until today 11-10, most days for just a couple hours, but a couple days I hit it pretty hard.

Total finds in 12 days, aside from a few dollars in modern "clad":

1 coal mine token "good for one exploder"

2 President tokens ca 1960s James Polk and James Garfield

a couple rolls of wheat pennies....I don't even save them since they're dug and damaged...except the 1909..I kept that one

2 indian head pennies, a bent 1903 and a 1906

3 sterling silver rings and a tiny silver military "stripes" part of a medal

35 silver coins, shown in the picture attached. Actually, there's one war nickel missing from the photo. I took another picture, but my finicky floppy disks sometimes won't work right, so I opted to just use this picture. It's enough to get the idea. This place was like stepping back into the old days of this hobby, when silver was easy to find. It's gotten very hard now....not even a silver dime the last 2 trips out, and there are so many places around here...that I guess "my work here is done" if finding silver is the name of the game, which it is for me.

I have a couple more old places that I'll be detecting before the snow flies, but this place is burned into my memory banks as the best place I've found in 20 years.

Thanks for enduring my excitement. It was a thrill a minute for awhile. I'm glad to have you all to share the excitement with.

Best of luck to all......and we'll have to see what the future holds for me in the way of finds. If nothing else, there are so many old yards here that still have silver, that I'll never be without a place to swing the coil. I'll bet none of them stack up to this place individually. This place was "special".

That's been a sweet spot Wyatt. It will be a great "backup" site.

HH,

Kent

It'll also be a good site for finding the indian heads, nickels and possibly gold that I left behind. The indian heads register about the same as a new zinc penny. War nickels also register about 50 on my meter. I may just go there and hunt in "all metal" mode...and use my ear to decide what to dig, like the old days when I had my beachcomber TR. There are some finds to be made there yet, but not nearly as many as there were a couple weeks ago.

You did good Wyatt!!!

;)

Thanks Nana.......I wish everybody on here could have the same good fortune as I had in finding this spot. It's so much fun to dig that much silver. You get to thinking..."this can't possibly be legal"....but the reality is that all of the stuff together doesn't have much monetary value. It's value is more sentimental....and the solace....well. that's priceless.

Best of luck to you.

Damn fine job Wyatt.Ive yet to find a spot near that sweet, but Im game to keep lookin....JO

I guess if there's anything about this adventure that's encouraging....it's that places like this are STILL out there. I have had a couple local backyards produce well...8 silver coins in one....5 in another. Public places you don't expect to do well as a rule, but there are good sites out there still.

It's probably going to be a major adjustment for me to go back to finding 2 silver coins every 3 trips. I can tell you....you can get used to bringing home more than one or 2 silver coins every trip out in a hurry. Back to reality for me.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Poor old school house.
? ?You use up her assets. ?Then you just dump her, like nothing ever happened.
? ? ? ? ?You Giggolo you. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? HH

We'll have to see how long it takes to go back....the allure of that place is strong. I did so well there that it'll be easy to say to myself..."surely I can bring that 40th piece of schoolhouse silver home this time"....

For this weekend......it's saturday at a new spot. There's about 2 acres of lawn, a house ca 1900 and a whole bunch of fringe areas to work first this time.

Wyatt

most of us dream of a spot like that so keep it coming man,KILLER DIGS MAN!!!!!!!

WTG Wyatt,

I'd say you had a heck of a run. Real nice finds there....Congrats.... ;D

Wow, what great finds. I bet that ole whites was a singin ha!ha! Also great pics. I once had a day like you had at a house in the town were I live in NW Ohio. I couldn't walk for two days after I left that GREAT HOUSE AND YARD.

Again, Thanks for the great Pictures and thanks for all your comments on the coins that I have recently found. You guys are in luck in Ohio, I didn't go hunting today, he he but tomorrow is another story!

I'd probably keel over dead if i found that much in one day. These finds were over a 12 day period. It was lots of fun though. It's been "back to private residences now"....and with some success.

I wish you all the best. Hope you find a big cache of silver and gold....me, I'm building mine, and having a ball.

Wyatt

Yeah, savor the moment. You probably are spoiled now. I had a spot like that. It was so easy...just do an hour or so a day. Bring home silver, wheat pennies, buffalo nickels. Haven't found another spot like it YET.

You must have been the first to do that school.

I bet you missed a lot of nickels. Guess they will be waiting for you. :)

Way to hunt.
Maybe someday we will all be as fortunate as you.
Great finds.

I want everybody here to have the kind of success they personally desire....for some it's civil war stuff...for some its coins...for some it's jewelry finds. Just keep swinging the coil and eventually you're going to make some nice finds. Keep trying out different locations and eventually you'll find some good spots. It's all about location. My areas don't have really old coins......but there's enough silver in the is neck of the woods to make it interesting for me, even if it is all 20th century coinage.

There have been several yards here that have done me well besides the old school, but yes....I too believe that for whatever reason, nobody worked that school lot before me.

Happy hunting.......

Wyatt

Location, Location, Location,... where have I heard that before? Oh yes it is in Real Estate. www.Robdurham.com Yes the same holds true for metal detecting. The location is very important and Wyatt you hit the nail on the head. All of us detector enthusiest just need to do the proper research and get out there and hope that you have not gone before us....
LOL!
Rob

...and even if I have already been there and cleaned up some of the silver.....just dig meter readings below 50 and you'll still make some nice finds....maybe even some gold rings.

I have set a goal of 75 silver coins by tonight....I'm at 73 right now. I just got permission to hunt another yard that is adjacent to the one that spit up the 42 walker on saturday.

I'll hit that one after supper for an hour or 2......we'll see. It's old turf too, so I expect to find silver there, but you just never know. I do know that this yard's never been detected either....and that giives me hope.
