OK here is a sweet find. My buddy found this coin the coin was wrapped in plastic and then it was cover with wax. This coin looks like it is in mint condition. Fro what I can find out is that someone gold plated them and was passing them off as 5 dollar gold the government put a recall on them or try to get them all out of circulation. Can anyone else tell me what you think it is worth it is a gold plated V nickle 1883 thanks for looking and any infor you can give me

Racketeer nickles. I think not to many years ago someone was still gold plating them and selling them as novelties. Probably not worth more than a few bucks. Nice find anyway.

No idea on its value but sure looks nice.

The first half of the mint run the coin didn't have the word cents on the back, halfway thru they added the word cents so there are actually 2 varieties of the 1883 V

Yep,, gold plated.
I pulled a gold plated state quarter, (New Mexico ), out of a plug, 2 or 3 years ago. The sun was over my shoulder and reflected off the coin when I held it up. Boy,, was I excited. I thought I had found my first Gold Coin. Found out that they are being sold on Ebay as novelty coins. Bummer.

Is the edge reeded or smooth? If smooth it is probably one of the coins plated more recently and sold as novelties, probably worth ten dollars or so.

Either way it's still one of the prettiest V Nickel's that I have ever seen, and plated or not gold is gold, and that's an awesome find!

Thats a cool find and something you dont see every day
