Well all this one has me wondering,

I have read that there are chinese copies of these floating around out there. However they are usually 20-21 grams and the authentics are supposed to be 27.22 grams well mine is showing 27.7 also there was supposedly only 1400 minted in 1879 as proofs and this one is definately not in proof condition anymore.

whats the pro's say? is it real? how much is it worth?

P.S. the only history I have on this is it come from a family member. He gave it to me for Christmas one year.

Sorry to say, it doesn't look good. The Trade dollar is really an interesting coin, it is a shame it is so heavily counterfeited.

what makes you think that is counterfeit? the weight is correct. just curious.

The details don't look right, especially the denticles around the edge.

Can you misspell "LIBERTY"? The maker of this die certainly did. "In God We Trust" looks like a bit hokey, too. A fake in my opinion. If you truly believe it to be genuine, please have it authenticated by a qualified expert. I love being wrong on things like this.

I have one similar. Have you stuck a magnet to it yet? I run across a lot of fake coins and this one looks that way but if it is silver you must have it authenticated by an expert.

:dontknow: Every time I click on your pics to get a close look. I start getting popups. Might just be my junk computer. Anyhow, some details look to too soft and others look too crisp, like the stars and edges. :dontknow: Just doesn't look right to me. I'm no expert though.

Folks,

Definitely a fake....the outer rim and both sides have sharp details on the denticles and stars....the center sections of both sides is very heavily worn...and Liberty is mispelled among other obvious defects/errors.

On a legit coin the level of wear should be more or less the same on the raised parts including the central and exterior sections of the coin and this one is nowhere near that evenly worn.

It's a knock off for sure.

Have you even looked up images of real ones? Not only is it a fake, it's a BAD fake!
