Back to my hunting spots at the Turn of the Last Century Park and a full morning of hunting. :metaldetector:

Scored a 2 coin spill on a steep trail. Had to work about 4" down under some roots to get at a very nice 1916-S Wheat Cent and a Buffalo Nickel with a barely legible date.

Elsewhere on the trail I found 2 matching parts of a ribbon buckle fairly close to each other. There are still traces of gold plating visible on a nice vintage design.

In some heavy underbrush at a remote and rocky end of the park was the Brooks Bros. button. According to Wikipedia.org, Brooks Brothers is the oldest retail brand and clothier in the U.S. and was founded in 1818 as a family business. This button appears to be rather old.

Having covered most of the trails, I began to scan an old growth thicket of mountain laurels that have yielded some nice Victorian age relics on previous hunts...

This is where I hit the last good target of the hunt... an 1878 Indian Head Cent. I knew it was an IHC but I was pleasantly surprised by the level of detail hidden under that layer of caked on dirt! It is a full LIBERTY with full detail on the feathers, diamonds on the ribbons, nicely detailed necklace, and Longacre's initial "L" clearly visible under magnification! :hello2: As might be expected, there is some pitting around the rim which can be expected after 142 years in the ground...

I just missed that 1877 by one year! :unhappysmiley:

Happy Hunting & Thanks for looking!
Nick

very good hunt - well done! Congrats!!!

That came out real nice. The soil here in southern Colorado eats coins for breakfast. I think it is the lime content.

Thank you, Horst! It was worth venturing off the trail.

Thank you, ecmijamsit! Luckily it was in an area of shallow, loamy soil with fine roots.
Thank you, Jose The Goon! This area has some nice stuff but it's pretty spread out.

That is one incredible Indian- looks like it went from a bank roll to the ground- the rest of those aren't bad either- Congrats

Thanks, JeffInMass! I can only imagine how shiny it was when it was dropped!

CT soil is some what cruel to nickles, but your Indian head penny looks great after cleaning.

Very nice hunt, beautiful IH cent! :icon_thumleft:

It's very cruel to anything older than a Jefferson Nickel around here, thrifty76now . There was a date but 3/4 of it was eaten away. Looks like a 1936 to me. The 1916-S was right near it in the same hole and came out just fine.

Thank you, Professor!... plus I was in need of a 1878 to fill the hole in my collection! :)
