I just came across some coins that I've had packed away for a couple of decades. My Mom gave me them and I think they came from her Dad. My favorite one is a 1873 Indian Head penny that does not have the wreath/one cent on the reverse. It has a design like wallpaper. It has 2 flowers that have round blossoms and some trim/border that is random. I tried to google some information but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know what happened to this coin?! Thanks for your help 121.JPG123.JPG124.JPG

Does it have United States of America on the obverse? A pic would null out many of our questions. Wecome aboard:thumbsup:

Here are a few pics. It was my first time trying to take a close up of a coin so it took some experimenting! Thanks for the feedback so far

Thanks!! What's a period piece?!! I'm sorry I don't know the "lingo." I have always loved old coins and treasure-hunting but this is my first day of researching coins.

Hahaha, Sutphin, yes I am the newest of the new! And it does have weird flowers on the back of the coin! Even if it's not worth anything, it has sentimental value for me. My grandfather died when I was eight so it's nice to have something of his that he loved collecting

this reminds me of a of cufflink I found years ago detecting. Mine is a silver dime or reale with one side sanded smooth then engraved like this. The front of my coin has the original coin details still there but a brass cufflink part soldered onto it. I will try to dig it out and get a picture of it. Yours might be something along those lines and not completed.

Could be "Hobo art."

Google "Hobo art coins" first, or "tramp art coins." Hobo art images got me the best results. I'm not an expert, but there is some history and value, and you can probably find out just as much as I can using an internet search.

Being period basically means the engraving of the altered reverse is from the same or near the same time frame of the coins circulation. The design lends itself to the time period of about 1880 to 1900.I do not think it is a token fabricated any time in our more modern era. A lot of time and skill went into this one, and is nicely done.

Thanks for the link to ebay for the patriotic tokens and not one cent coins. So interesting. I wanted to be an archaeologist when I was growing up. This has sure rekindled that love of treasure hunting :)

BosnMate- thanks for the info. I couldn't find anything! Gonna go google that now.
Villagenut- thanks for the great definition and help. I agree that it's nicely done- I thought it was some sort of error in the minting.
