Got out with Gary(foundationhunter) to a long down the mountain dirt road to a cellar hole site (ps the walk back up stunk) Gary got a nice oval Civil war US boxplate,i got a few buttons, a bridle roseette,a key hole plate and this dated 1864 pewter eagle thing which i beleive is a presidential campaign pin. 2 portraits may have went in the oval portions and are long gone was a long hike but a good day.ticks were abundent but weather was gorgeous!

I think yours might be gilded pewter, only most of the gilt has gone. I was thinking that even before the match was posted. Gilded items always have a base metal, so could have easily been pewter. Or is it just your shiny pic? Hard to say for sure not seeing it in person.

If it's a match I'm thinking it's probably the right ID.

Maybe I missed the info that showed the pin was used in the Lincoln campaign, but since I did not see such a photo showing that and do see one that shows 1884, I have to go with the 1884 over 1864. The two nubs not on yours could easily be broken off since those areas are damaged and they easily could have been there. As far as being Pewter, not unusual for pins, medals and such to be made of differnt materials. I see no disclaiming factor to say it is other than a 1884 dated pin.

He just changed the title the closer we got to an ID, and I assume will change again now that it seems to have been solved. He's probably out there digging his next GW button. ;D

No confusion, you have seen an 1884 example darn near identical, no 1864 example at all and you are talking 20 years difference. Must remember, variants exist in buttons, medals, pins, badges, etc. BTW, I was going by the back side photo showing missing pewter on both sides, did not consider the front part.
