A quick history lesson on Porter beer from an old home-brewer (me):

Porter was originally a blend of different types of ale (mixed by the bartender, not at the brewery) and was the beverage of choice for transportation laborers (porters) in London in the late 1700's. Back then, beer was considered food and it was attributed to the brawny porter's stamina and vigor. This did not go unnoticed by upper class gentlemen, who quickly accepted the practice of drinking porter. As is often the case with gentlemen of means, practice turned to passion and passion turned to profit. Fortunes were made brewing and selling Porter.

Durham County Records office

I didn't know what a porter merchant was either. When I searched google it always came up with beer or ale. So, then I looked up porter in the dictionary. I put the two together - porter merchants sell porter beer. ;D
[/quote] I meant Durham county. ;) Cool.
