1853 Braided Hair Cent

It's time I posted my large cent where it might stay for awhile.
I found this around 5 years ago in the town of Mazeppa,Minnesota.
It was under the grass in sandy soil 3 or 4 inches down.
It's the only large cent I ever found. It has some dings on it and
all I did to it was toothbrush,soap and water clean up. Roger

I'm not sure.I planted next to the garage and maybe to hot.We also have a walnut tree and my neighbor says things don't grow well with a walnut tree near-by.Could be poor soil or old seeds and a late start.The peppers turned out great.Good luck this year nget.

I'm really surprised at the lack of corrosion. Could be the sandy soil drains well, but also surprised that sandy soil soil doesn't make old coins too deep to detect. I know they did a renovation of that park according to an old Google aerial map, but can't remember which year. Maybe the bulldozing made your LC move upward?

Thanks for your tip about large cents can ID below dime. Since I almost always reject pulltabs, that may be why a Large Cent is the most commonly found coin I've never found, The park in Mazeppa dates back to 1855, but many city parks in S central & SE MN were made in the 1850s.

I detected the Mazeppa park in the late 1970s, only found a 1912 wheat cent. Met 2 guys there that had Compass detectors with 12" coils. They were disappointed they weren't finding much and mentioned they used to find Liberty Seated coins there. They were from Rochester.

To the person from NW MN, would Pembina, ND be too far for you to drive? They had 637 people in 1850 & the city park is right next to the Red River of the North where the 1st settlers would have arrived.

St. Paul was incorporated in 1849 with 3 small parks for the roughly 800 people. Pretty sure they had a few thousand people by 1857, as pop. over 10,000 in 1860. St. Anthony (NE Minneapolis) had 548 people in 1840.
