1850's Sporting 2 Piece Coat Button

I got out for a quick hunt after work and returned to one of my favorite sites. There are not many signals left, but I slowly worked an area with a lot of iron with my D2 coil until I finally got a shotgun shell type of signal. The depth measured .5 inches, and there on the surface was a shotgun shell. I had the feeling that it was dug by another person and either tossed, or left where it was found. After putting it in my pocket I rescanned the spot and got another shotgun type of signal, this one reading much deeper, at 5 inches. It was still in the hole after digging a deep plug, and I was able to pinpoint it another few inches further down with my Pro-Pointer. I pulled out the target from about 9 inches down and to my surprise it was a nice pre-Civil War 2 piece flat sporting coat button; my first!

The button is large, measuring 26mm. The backmark reads "New Designs" and has a horn on the bottom. As you can see it has a fully intact shank.

A little while later I dug this strange item that is about the size of a uniform button, It is relatively heavy, but hollow. It looks like it may have hung from a nail. Any ideas on the ID are appreciated!

First sporting button I've seen, great Find.
Lead object? can't help there, Got many myself, tough to ID.
What happened to that 'low alpha lead' (pre 1935) that was supposedly selling for $18 per oz, I got over 100 lb if anyone knows!
Keep em Comin!

I am having trouble finding another like this one, so if anyone has info on this design or the manufacturer it is appreciated. I see many from the manufacturer with other designs, but none like this one.

Pretty neat history on the sporting buttons.I have been fortunate to have found a couple, but they are not real common.Yours is obviously a fox and what appears to be a rabbit(?)the fox was a common motif as was the wild boar as both were big sport in England

Looks like a bunny in the hole with the fox waiting patiently.

It does look like there is a design, but it is lead and it does not stand the test of time very well. It almost looks like an image of a mill, which would make sense since that is where it was found. I will try to post a better photo if I can bring out some detail.

Thanks for looking!

could have sworn I replied to this one :icon_scratch: :laughing7: Anyway, sportsman's buttons are not something that is found everyday.. In my couple years of digging, I have one.. I only know one other guy around here who also has one. I'm sure there's more, but somewhat an under-appreciated relic for how uncommon they are. Yours looks great :icon_thumleft:

Thanks for the replies. I do not remember the last time I saw another one posted. The ones that I have seen on collectible websites are common ones featuring a boars head, foxes head or a dog. I have not been able to find one with this design.

I would rank the button as one of my best finds this year...and I have made quite a few!
