I found this 1849 large cent the other day. It looks like it could be a Newcomb 18. What do you think?

Newcomb is the variety of that large cent. Like Cohen is another Variety. some are rare while others are common. R-1 common. R-7 RAREI’m not understanding. Newcomb 18? I have an 1831 penny like yours but I had no idea there was anything special about them.
The Newcomb varieties refer to the position of the date and other land marks such as die cracks, blunt numbers and letters. ect. on the large cent. On this large cent I'm looking at the position of the top of the 1, the curl over the 8 and position of the 4 among other things. "United States Copper Cents 1816-1857" by Howard R Newcomb is one book that shows the different varieties. Can you explain what a "Newcomb 18" is? I find any number of references to it and several coins claiming to be, but no explanation.
