Hello,

Got out this morning after a bit of a detecting drought. I hit a virgin to me empty city lot. I found a few pennies and dimes, the oldest a 40s wheat back. On the way home I saw they had torn out a stretch of cobbled street in town. I had heard of other fellows having good luck under old streets and sidewalks.
I really didn't think there would be much. The exposed gravel that was under the cobble looked too new. I still swung on. About 45 seconds into it, I got a strong, 1.5" deep signal. I picked apart the clumps and found a small disc. I brushed it off a bit and saw the faint outline of a head and the encompassing stars. I knew it was good. I couldn't wait to get home and clean it up. It is an 1833 half dime. My oldest coin and first bust styled coin. It is not in the best of shape. It is pretty crusty and has been holed.
I also ended up finding what appears to be a large cent and a nickle. Both are very encrusted and will be soaking for a long time. Also, I found a very neat wrought copper coat hook.

Thanks,

Stu

What great findsI'm sure you will be returning to that spot real soon.

RD,

I plan on going back first thing in the morning. I'll see how it goes. Everytime I find something good and go back, I end up getting skunked!

Awesome! Does that not give you a rush, knowing you just turned back the pages of time?
I guess I'll pay closer attention to street tearups.

Thanks guys. I am in Wisconsin. My oldest coin before today was an 1852 large cent. I really thought that would be tough to beat. Just goes to show that the stuff is out there!

Nice half dime Stu, it has alot of nice detail!

Really sweet find.

Hope the others clean up for you.

Just a quick update: I had the others soaking in some gas in the garage. Looks like the large cent is an 1856. I thought the other was a nickel, it is an Indian. I can see the feathers on the top of the head dress peeking through the crud. I will update with some pics when the crud comes off.
