Relic Hunting
My buddy Chris and I have been hunting a very large piece of property looking for a camp known to be in the area. We were hunting the side of a hill near the railroad tracks and working our way down towards the creek. There was a lot of trash from where an old house must has sat as it was littered with square nails and broken glass and pottery. Both of us were using the Minelab Equinox which works great in trashy areas. The previous week I found an 1899 Barber dime and a heel plate and Chris found a three ringer and a spoon. Chris made the comment that he saw on an old map that there used to be a road that went under the railroad trestle down to the creek and across to the next field (different owner and that is where we think the camp is). So he walked over to where the road may have been and immediately found a bullet. Then another. I told Chris that I was going to walk to the bottom of the hill towards the creek. First signal was a nice flat button. Then about 3 feet away I got a nice sweet tone reading about 21 on the Equinox and reading about 8" deep. I dug down the length of my shovel which is about 12" and laying in the bottom of the hole I could see a silver coin laying in the bottom. I hollered at Chris and said I have another silver dime. He looks in hole and says it looks funny and must be a foreign coin. When I got it out we could see 33 for the date but still did not look like a seated dime and was smaller. Chris got out his spray bottle of water and we gently cleaned off the dirt. That is when the mystery came to light. It was an 1833 Capped Bust half dime in pretty good shape.

Sweet!

Nicely done, and all the best,

Lanny

Thank you all. This was my last hunt of 2018 and what a way to end it. I can't wait to go back and see what 2019 will bring there.

Thank you. Research takes a lot of work. Then you have to get permission and hopefully find something. This coin was totally unexpected. I really thought it was going to be another button and it was deep. We are going back in two weeks so I hope we can find more.

WOW, fantastic!

To think I spent many years fishing for crappie and bass. With a $25,000.00 bass boat, spending thousands of dollars on equipment, travel, gas, motel rooms, etc. all in the name of fun and an enjoyable hobby. Now it's much more fun unearthing a 100+ year old coin or relic; and getting something tangible and lasting for having fun doing it

Better go get your lottery ticket today.. :icon_thumright:
Incredible find..
Congrats..

Compared to Fishing Relic hunting is pretty cheap .

I feel a pull to hunt Tennessee , IDK , guess cause I was born there . ???
Good Luck & Fun . & Welcome to T-Net.

Yeah, with the advent of the computer, internet, Google Earth, on-line plat maps, etc., it makes our research faster and more effective as I'm just now finding out. Where I came from near St. Louis, there was plenty of very old parks and places to keep me busy finding what others passed over. The days of easy pickings of the 70's - 80's are definitely over. There's plenty of turn of the 19th century homes around here I drool over to hunt, but I don't have the courage to walk up to their door and ask them if I can dig a bunch of holes in their nice yards for my personal pleasure. So I write them a letter :dontknow: So far no luck though, I wonder how all those Youtubers get all those permissions? Here shortly as winter arrives, I'll be an arm chair MDer watching YT videos anyway.
