Got back to a place that's yielded 7 coppers previously, but hadn't given up silver... until today! Started out with a few buttons but haven't even had a chance to check them out yet. Earlier in the hunt I got a shallow target signal. What came out was something I've never seen before. In fact, I can't even imagine what it could be used for. It looks to be copper or brass and only gave it a light toothbrushing. That top loop turns, and that half moon part moves. There are two circular pieces that looked to have originally moved freely on a bar (one's now frozen). Any idea what it could be???

Later in the hunt as thunder started coming in I got a junk signal but it had a high pitch on one angle. Figured the worst that could happen was a nail would come out and decided to dig it. Once it was out of the hole the pitch changed... it was a silver tone!! Took an absolute horrific video which I might post, but it's bad all the way around. Wasn't sure what it was at first, but soon realized it was a capped bust dime! Unfortunately the reverse rim got a little scrape on it, and it's stained. BUT, it's still capped bust silver!!

It was identified as a JR-5, which is an R1.

Superb dime! That baby didn't pass through to many hands before it passed to yours! I like your mystery item....whatever it is!

Thanks everyone! Was quite the surprise to see the details emerge after cleaning. Will be hard to top this in terms of details. It may have been next to iron or maybe near a fire. There seems to be evidence of one.

That mystery item may have had glass like some have suggested. The frozen circular piece on it may have glass remnant in it. So is some kind of watch fobish piece the leading candidate?

I think pepperj called it.

wick

i'm guessin but would it be a keroscene or whale oil lamp adjustment for the wick on an old lamp . nice old dime! problably about the same time frame as the wick adjust.usely made of thin brass.

is that a wick adjustment for a real old whale oil or kero lamp should be made of thin brass

Looks like pepper called it and surf has a great picture of what your mystery item is. Alway amazing how people help on this site. Congrats on your finds. Keep swinging that machine!!!!!

very nice!

Where was the dime found? What type of soil (sandy?)? The condition looks like it came from a dirt cellar. I'm trying to figure out why it isn't toasted?

it came from a field but I'm fairly certain a structure of some sort was nearby as there is a lot of iron in the area. It is possible something burnt down as it looks like there's some black dirt in the area. I'm not sure why this coin was stained. It may have been affected somehow by heat or it may have been been near some iron as it is rust colored.

I found one yesterday did not what it was congrats to you20130915_092820.jpg
