...The title should be "half dime" not dime

I got a gracious invite from HomeGuardDan to detect at an old and beautiful site here in Virginia yesterday along with Beau and Bill D.. One of my first targets of the day was a beautiful capped bust half dime which is the first one I've ever found. Aside from a few nicks this coin is in great condition. I was also able to pull out a few buttons and buckle pieces throughout as well. About half way through the hunt, Bill D. came up to me and asked me to play a trick on Dan by digging a planted Cromwell Commonwealth halfgroat. Even though I thought my acting debut was stellar, Dan wasn't buying any of it. I could see him out of the corner of my eye just staring at me with lie-detector stare....oh well
:tongue3: It was a beautiful day (besides the 400 mph winds) and I came away with a first-time coin for me. Thanks Dan!

That coin is beautiful

Killer coin. You could easily go a lifetime and never find a capped bust in that condition. Congrats!

Congrats on the first capped dime, Joey. It's great when you find a first in that condition. For some reason I have been lucky in that category as well.

How do you get things so clean? Is that a crazy question? Im new to detecting.....please forgive me if it is.

Congrats on your first seated!

Great find there Joey, that CB has some awesome detail on it. You have a very early button there too(forefront, sixth pic). Is there any design on the face of it. ZDD
Thanks Dave. That button is just a solid cast drilled-shank button back. The glass one in the other picture has a similar early button back that coincidentally I found the exact same one last week at a site 50 miles+ away http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=953418&d=1393795434 (bottom right in the picture)

Edit: Here are the two together. They were probably each part of their own set of cufflinks. UKDFD has quite a few examples of the same 17th-18th century cufflinks.

99% of coins I dig never come out in that condition. As far as "clean", not many of my silver coins need much cleaning other than light rinsing. Coppers are a different story. For years I over-cleaned them until I practically destroyed any detail that was barely hanging on to begin with. Now I just lightly brush the dirt away and be happy I can make out a bust. It's natural to want to "clean" dirt away but you'll probably do more harm than good. The below Virginia Halfpenny that I found a couple of weeks ago has some dirt on it but I know if I try to clean it off I'll probably hurt the super fine details on it so I'm just going to stick it in my display case and admire it as is

Congrats on the beautiful capped dime. Still looking for one of those myself.

Awesome condition! Congrats...you must have been super excited!

What a beauty! A phenomenal find! And a half dime at that! Congrats!

Congrats Joey on a great coin! I am glad you were able to sniff out a nice keeper.

As for the prank - revenge is imminent for all those involved BWAA HA HA HA

I will try and post my stuff up later today - the entire weekend was great - but yesterday takes the cake! get ready for not just a colonial bonanza post - but a pit bonanza post!

Thanks silversweeper. My first old silver find was a slick capped bust quarter and ever since then I've always been fond of the capped bust series. Maybe it's just the type of sites I lean towards but I've found way more 1600s coins than capped bust silver.

It has to do with the sites and also the amount of currency and years of use. I too have found plenty more spanish silver coins than capped bust coins. I have found a good number of the capped bust half dimes and only two capped bust dimes and never anything larger. I have more seated coins than those. I hope you dig more in the future.

Beautiful Half dime...
I dug one not long ago that was also my first Target of the day.
I love the Capped Bust series as well.
