Spent a beautiful fall afternoon in the button field next to the 1780 house. I thought that my Brother and I had pretty much cleaned the field out, but, I was obviously wrong. The heavy snow from last week took all of the tall grass and smashed it down. I decided to take a look in these areas and found a 1820 and 1821 Large cent. The 1821 is a key date to the set. Also found three nice buttons a small harness buckle and another larger buckle along with something that says Denmark on it. I think it is a type of a lock washer and is probably new. Then to top the afternoon off, we had a beautiful sunset. Thanks for looking...Lance

don't worry you appear to have a long way to go before you "hunt" it out especially with winter coming the frost will mix up the ground and then mud season will help out too one good thing about the north things sink, but they also rise

Excellent finds!

Did you say snow? Ugh, I'm not ready for that yet. Hope to get out at least a dozen more times....

Sweet finds! :)

I like your pictures of the place(s) also. It almost makes it seem like we were there with you. Great way to share the hunt/finds. I am always trying to bring the camera with me on my hunts so that when I find something good I can post a picture of where it came from. I don't know if I can top your scenery.

Lance, please educate me on something here. I have hunted old sites, but not that old. I wouldn't really think of hunting a field nearby unless by research is stated a camp grounds like churches had or something like that. You however have a great field. I just have never had a reason to hunt a field except where CW relics my reside. What am I missing. Second question is open to anyone that might know but it appears that hardly any large cents are found south of the M & D line. Is it because that they were out of circulation by the time that the south was well estabilished with settlements except in sparce locations which are primarily protected sights which cannot be hunted.

Thanks for any insights Tim.

Thanks Tim. I always hunt fields. If they are near a house, people have always used them for a lot more than fields. People would picnic in them, particulary in high spots with a view. They were also sometimes used for dumping and burning things. Also, if it was a hay field, there were people in there mowing, stacking hay. They would lose things, like buttons. Sometimes fields were used for revivals, circus or other such things. I am trying to find one now that I know was used as a muster field for the militia in the early 1800's. I love fields and have always found something in them. It takes a lot of time and patience, but is usually well worth it...Lance
