Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

Congrats on some nice finds! Howard Crouch has a buckle similar to your large Batwing on page 228 of his Civil War Artifacts books which he identifies as a "very heavy cast brass sword sling buckle". He has it in a section at the back of the book for pre civil war artifacts.

But, for another opinion on these buckles from none other than Don Troiani, follow the attached link to the last sentence in the first response to this post. Vonrall is actually Don Troiani as is revealed further down in the thread.

Looks like the cross belt buckles from the book British Army in North America by May & Embleton :icon_thumleft:
so,it's safe to say this is indeed Rev War British military?
Dave, Bob lavoy has found many of these buckles at rev war sights. He is one of the first to Id these buckles. I have also found quite a few and they all came from colonial sights. HH

Thought it might be,
Bridle pendant is what I meant..
Crossbar shows it to be a buckle, I'm still learning here
I'd have been scratchin too, "heart pendant"?? :laughing9:

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

You made a haul HMN!!! I love the big buckle. The shield shaped piece shown inside the big buckle in the first pic is of the type called a "Saddle Ornament" in Crouch's CW relic book on page 140. Tennessee Digger dug one in a C.S.A. camp used by Gen. John Hunt Morgan's Fall 1862 camp. It's pictuted in my Aug. 2010 "Chasing Gen. John Hunt Morgan C.S.A." article published in American Digger Magazine. Great saves, Quindy.

Sorry about that Dave, I forgot its a 3 part video because its to long for youtube. He does show a display case of colonial buckles with your particular buckle in the case. HH

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

I'm sorry to be the one to rain on the parade but it's about time this fairy tale is laid to rest. The "batwing" buckles are 19th Century horse harnesss buckles. Nothing to do with the American Revolution, the British Army, in any way shape or form. Many colonial sites were worked by loggers and farmers to the present day which is why these buckles and 19th Century coins, shotgun shells , etc are also found on colonial sites. These are commonly sold on ebay to unknowing buyers as revolutionary war, they are not!!!

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

Still....I'm talking about the Giant "Batwing" buckle  Excellent Save's !!

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

Nice 1810 :headbang: we like " Batwing Buckles ", no matter what era ! The batwing has been an ongoing controversy but it has been accepted for what it is ??? :icon_scratch: :read2: :dontknow: fairy tale ... that's messed up . :laughing7:

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

Super finds!

All the best,

Lanny

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

Dave,i believe that buckle is a Revolutionary Sword Cross Plate Buckle and not a 19th Century horse harnesss buckle.
Nice Finds Foundation Hunter

Re: 1810 CLASSIC HEAD LC * BUCKLES & BUTTONS

this buckle looks too primitive for 19th century and why would buckles like this be in a rev war book of british buckles? :icon_scratch: i don't know :dontknow:

Everything in the 19th Century was not a work of art, 18th Century items can be very refined , because something is cruder does not mean it is older. They were not in a book on revolutionary war buckles, because there are none except "History Written with Pick and Shovel" based on 1920s New York Historical Society field reports and that doesn't have one (probably because they knew what they were and were still using them at the time). My new book on plates and buttons will not have them either. There are NO period pictures (as in painted before 1785) that show these buckles worn by a soldier. It is a myth created by those who sell them on ebay. BTW most 18th frame buckles do not have the center bar set on top the frame, it is usually is cast in line with the frame. Among experienced collectors and dealers this has been a running joke as they see suckers buy these as 18th Century cross belt buckles.

^^^^ if they are not in any books then why would he quote this above? ^^^^
and here's another example of a batwing style i dug or are these called trapezoid buckles?.are you saying this one is 19th century too? this came from a site where nothing but colonial shoe buckles, colonial state coppers and KG's came from. not one 19th century item came outta this site.the buckle was at the same depth as the other relics.

You'll have ask him . It is NOT a book on buckles however (even he didn't say that it was) , it's a poor cheap reference of modern drawings . I've found .22 shells as deep as revolutionary regimental buttons on campsites, does that make them revolutionary war as well? Do you have any "period" pictures to show us of French or British soldiers wearing these "cross belt buckles" . Lets see just one original period picture of a soldier with a batwing buckle, just one. I've been studing 18th Century uniforms and equipage for 45 years , examined hundred of original pictures painted at the time and have never seen one.

BTW you asked me for my comments in a private message, so I have given it to you. If you don't want to hear the truth there's really not a lot more I can say. But I always give my honest opinion and never tell what I think someone would like to hear. There are so many old wives tales floating around about revolutionary war artifacts it's nearly impossible to correct them and many prefer to believe what they want to believe.

I'm just asking questions Don.I love history & like to learn as well.could this smaller buckle pictured above be a colonial era spur buckle?
I have dug a complete iron spur with the buckle fused to it and obviously the buckle style is different than the last pics i posted. below is the spur with buckle.is this 18th century & rev war military possibly??
below is a link to 1600-1700 spur buckles
