I found these yesterday, but am posting today because there was better lighting for pictures today.

I did some digging at an 1870's house that I have detected a bunch. 10 minutes in I dug this gold gilt 2 piece button

I stayed for about 2 hours in total and wasn't finding much, except for an old iron file. I was getting ready to leave, but got a great signal, 99 at 8 inches. After I had dug the plug, I pulled a handful of dirt out of the hole, and out came a big green copper. I cleaned it off using a toothpick and was very surprised to see that it was an 1803 Draped Bust!

I think it was there because I found it 12 feet from the road. The house I was detecting is in an old part of town, and the road is old too. Someone was probably going by on the road and this coin fell out of their pocket.

This is why I like metal detecting, you never know what you are going to find!

Nice find!

A couple of nice old saves. Congrats! Yes you never know whats under the coil. It’s like opening presents at Christmas.

I would lemon juice that button (5 minutes then nail brush under warm water), the exposed copper will go a bit reddish/dark but the gold will make up for it.

Thank you Crusader, I just tried the method you suggested and it worked out GREAT.

Definitely one of the best parts about detecting! I think it's so cool to dig an "out of place" find and think about how it got there.

Nice save!

Thank you for the kind words

Thanks, I am glad that I found it in a yard rather than in a field where it might be in much worse shape.

Thank you for the comment, this is actually my first Draped Bust large cent!

Great looking finds, congrats.
I was thrilled to find both of them! Thanks for the kind words.

Great looking drapped bust
Thank you! It looked like it was in worse shape right out of the dirt... the picture I posted is after toothpicking it.
