Re: 1803 Jamaica Brass Buckle

Welcome to TreasureNet!

Your item appears to be a uniform crossbelt plate... perhaps from a British regiment serving in Jamaica in 1803. Great find!

One possibility might be the 20th Light Dragoons, who from 1792 to 1805 had the subsidiary title '"Jamaica," and from 1797 bore the badge of an alligator on their helmets. Perhaps they bore a similar device on crossbelt plates as well.

It needs to be authenticated and valued by a professional militaria specialist.

Check your messages.

Thanks Don!

I do not see a G.R. or crown on it, however it may be worn off or perhaps be visible if it is cleaned.

That site said croc, but Alligator seems more appropriate in my opinion and most likely more correct, shame no photo on that site unless you join......

HOLY SH@T! That has got to be a BIG find, if genuine! At the very least, four figures.

Do NOT clean the piece any more. It is just fine as-is. And the "dug" patina will probably increase its value.

Wow. If this piece is authenticated, it will likely be the most valuable piece on the Banner. :o

We have the American Crocodile here in far South Florida and they probably have/had them in Jamaica as well. It could be a Croc.

"One of Jamaica's largest reptile, the American Crocodile can be seen on the Royal Helmet and Mantles on the Jamaican Coat of Arms and as such it is a part of our natural heritage".

Not sure how much experience you have but selling straight to a collector can easily get you a much lower price because they know what it's worth, the finder does not. So knowing exactly what you have and what the value is, is the first step. After that it doesn't matter how you sell it. The better collectors don't usually offer a price on stuff they really want so it's up to you to ask what you want so it's obviously better to shoot high!

Doubt it, would have been engraved like the rest and the plate which is in excellent condition. I'd say that's exactly how it should be.
