I'm going with a banner vote on this find. I'm surprised that posted belt plate finds don't receive more praise, especially those later-period belt plates for swords that are occasionally posted. The overall appearance of this earlier plate is great; the holes just add some charm and mystery to the find. I seldom see such an early belt plate posted here. Awesome Find! A find like that would keep me smiling for a long, long time.

Freakin' beautiful.

It is a banner find...
In my opinion this is 100% legit...
But then again I am no expert on this...

But I do know a little about a lot. :P

I want to add my opinion to those "holes"...

IMO... looks like it was used at some point for a target for bird shot... twice...
Hit once from the front by 3 pellets...
And from reverse by the looks of other holes.

Prolly shot by someone who was not fond of this buckle for a reason.
Birdshot was the first thing I thought of too...holes look too random to be anything else.

So glad this got on the banner! What a beautiful find!!!

Wow! What a great find. Thanks for showing it

Very nice it looks like the 1814 pattern to me. There are quite a few versions of the same plate. Is very rare find indeed mine does not have any hooks left on the back like yours does.

Needless to say I would keep hunting that spot I would love to find a button to go with my plate I see people post the buttons all the time but I sure can't find any I hope you find more stuff like that congratulations

Listed in Buckles and Plates of the American Military 1795 - 1874 Sydney Kerksis page 166, sword belt plate of militia artillery officer, ca 1810, rarity of 8. I found one in NY in 1997, very slightly different. Nice find of a sweet plate, and congratulations on making the banner!

So much detail on that honey, congrats on your banner find.

Great find congratulations.

Great details on the belt plate, congrats!Go back and give this area a GOOD SEARCH and show us the finds there have to be more great ones.....

There's nothing random about those holes at all - 7 of them are co-linear and essentially at perfect right angles.

I agree Erik, they seem too have been put there for a reason
