I found this piece yesterday while metal detecting with my Tesoro Lobo.. near tailing piles and lots of square nails in California. I believe it is a the metal piece that goes on the wood handle of an 1800s pistol. I looked at online for images and there are some with this exact piece. Anyone know if this piece is specific to a certain manufacturer, style or date?

Do you have examples of those images you found? I cannot come across them in my search.

They appear to almost always use a single central tapered head screw hole. I see two small holes in your image.

I know I was wondering about the size.. there is only one hole in the center.. less than an inch tall, 2-3/8" diameter.

The 49'ers use to carry a pocket gold weighing scale. I found one piece years ago up on Shirt Tail Creek in the Mother Lode of California. It had been run over by a wagon but was still flat and in good shape being made of brass. Three little holes were around the rim to hold a lite weight brass chaine. Look for these tiny little holes to confirm.
