1800's Foreign Coin?

My Dad found this while hunting around the ruins of an old house recently. Most of the surface is complete eaten away by something corrosive; just enough of the markings remain to (hopefully) make an ID. Very tricky to get this to scan, since the light had to hit it just the right way. A pen was used to provide the right amount of tilt.
The best guess either of us can offer is that it's a mid-1800's coin, probably foreign. It registered as copper and measures about 1 3/8" in diameter.
He found this with a cheap Radio Shack Discovery 3; I have to wonder what a Minelab Explorer might find in this area!
Any advice would be appreciated.

Looks like a 1700s coin to me (large penny of sort).

Re: 1800's Foreign Coin?

There appears to have been something on the reverse, however it was so badly degraded that it would not scan. It appears to have had some kind of floral pattern around the border (on the other side).
I believe this area was settled around 1830, so it is possible it may be something colonial. Where could I possibly find pictures of colonial coins (online or in print), to make a comparison?
