Some sites just never die...I worked this place over pretty good last year, so I thought...

Went back yesterday, this time chasing down all those iffy signals. About the 4th hole I dug I pull another square nail swept the hole again and got a penny ID. You know those annoying little triangles of copper or aluminum? Well I spot this little wedge thing in the hole impacted with dirt...wiped it off with my thumb getting ready to stick it in the scrap metal bucket and then I see the date, 1796...then I go into a panic, just hoping it's not an early US dollar. Fortunately it turns out to be a 1/8 slice cut from a 1 Reale Spanish dollar. And luckily, I got the wedge with the date.

I tried to swing again, but couldn't concentrate...my first 18th century silver. Had to go back to the truck to sit down and take a break. Went back out after calming down a bit. After another hour of nothing but square nails I got a nice quarter ID up against a root...turned to be the ugliest Large Cent I ever dug...up close the date of 1828 is barely visible.

After that I had to leave to go do other stuff, 2 hour hunt and two old coins...just 13 1/2 cents on the day.

ps....love the list of items you've found in the woods...some items gave me a chuckle :D

Jim, Both really good finds. The slice of eight is awesome - especially with the date. But the thing I find even more amazing is your list of stuff found in the woods. 78 Toy guns?!! 200+ sinkers?!!! :o Looks like you have been busy cleaning up the woods. ;D
