I'd put it off long enough so I finally felt compelled to send my coin off to see what they'd say about it. Ok first off when I dug it some said it was fake. Ok for those knuckleheads here's what NGC said. It's in a folder, it's original , has AU details, but it came back as being improperly cleaned which is BS! All I did was rinse the dirt off it ! It still has some dirt on it as all of it didn't come off from being rinsed! The guy at the coin shop said the reason they said it had been cleaned is that a coin this old should be pretty tarnished. Now what I didnt tell them was that it was a dug coin.I hoped it would not get that environmental damaged logo stuck to it as it was so nice. Can I help that it came out the sand looking this clean? OH well AU details is decent I guess. Any opinions? I see they said neal's was damaged yet he still got 3500.00 for his. I assure you I havent cleaned this coin. It is as dug, unfortunately not enough tarnish on it for NGC:laughing7:

It shouldn't make a bit of difference what you say or don't say because true professionals would base the grading 100% on the condition, and that sounds like what they did. Even though it looks beautiful, the reason there is no tarnish is probably because there's a million extremely tiny scratches that show up under strong magnification... and that's why it's called cleaned. So basically I agree with what your friend said. Plus the over all surface probably shows signs it was dug if you look close enough.

I remember when you found this coin ! No matter what anyone says... you are but a hanfull of people that have ever found a coin of this caliber. I would be quite happy with a grade of AU cleaned on a dug coin. I bet you are glad that you didnt hit it with your shovel:laughing7:

Yep, I often look at my better finds and think how bad a hack would look across the center. Hitting a coin like that with your shovel would probably make you sick for a month.

Yes if you told them it was dug, they would have known the scratches were from the ground
and labeled in environmental damage.

Because you didn't, they assumed it was improperly cleaned causing the fine scratches.

it's a loose/loose on that.

AU on detail is great though

You have a beautiful coin there. I would not be concerned with the grading. Congrats..

I agree that the dirt caused fine scratches in the coin. It's still abbsolutely beautiful. You can always break it out and stick it in a Taco Bell napkin for a bit to tone it up :).

Btw there are plenty of unnaturally white coins in plastic in problem free holders. Just check eBay for other 18th century coins but my guess is the scratches for the designation

That is one heck of a find! I wouldn't care if it had been in a fire and ran over by a train, I would love to have found it. Congrats. Tennessee digger

You didn't clean it but someone else might have cleaned it a long time ago before it was lost. Use a 10x magnifier and you can probably see what the NGC is talking about. It is very common for old coins to have been "cleaned" at some point. On a coin as rare as this I don't think it's going to hurt the value too much. AU says it all.
Great find

Killer coin Pete! That sugar sand is might sweet to relics.

I probably would never even send a dug coin off for grading. I think your coin is beautiful and for it's age and being in the ground that long, it's perfect!

When I sent mine in I was expecting the worst...but "improperly cleaned" to me is worse than "environmentally damaged". If I am not mistaken, you may be able to appeal their decision and re-submit it.

FYI, after selling my 1795 Half Dime, the buyer cracked open the slab and sent it to another grading service.

Neil, what company did the buyer send it to? Hopefully not ACG or anything! It will come back as an MS65, haha. Not even sure if ACG is still in business.

awesome find, could I ask what you got for that coin.:leprechaun-hat:
