Relic Hunting
KKC got out today for our usual Sunday Colonial relic hunt. Last week, Kyle and I drove by the F. tavern site that has produced 23 coppers this year for us. The hay was cut!!! You can only guess where the KKC crew would be sweeping today.

Once we got on the site, our passions were boiling with the fever. I think I even heard Zeus saying, "I got the fever BAD!" Kyle was muttering something under his breath that pertained to Chain cents or George Washington buttons. It was not long before we got our 1st great target of the day.

As the day progressed and my pouch was filled with relics, I still had not found a copper yet. That was when it happened. I got an iffy "Dime" hit that sounded like a piece of iron. I started to dig and upon scanning the dirt, I could not find the target. I re-scanned the hole and it was giving a "Dollar" hit, but that, too, sounded like a big piece of iron...I kept digging, until I flipped out a large copper. I did not even have to pick it up and I knew what I had. I yelled over to Zeus, "Copper! I got a THICKY!" Kyle ran over and started to scratch the dirt off and revealed a perfect 1794 Liberty Cap large cent!!! We were all whooping it up, just like the tavern-goers did 210 years ago. The coin was in the same hole with a piece of iron.

Another hour later, I got a nice "Dime" hit and after 5" of dirt, I had a nice 1817 Coronet cent. The day soon ended after that! It does not get any better than a day at the F. tavern!!! Drinks on me, folks!

Keep the passion high!

Kirk

With Liberty Cap coppers being my favorite to find, WTG of getting another one and a nice 1817 to compliment it! That site is without a doubt an outstanding one, tavern sites do seem to produce way more than a normal work area or homestead.

Nice one Kirk, wonder what they were drinking in 1794. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

enough to lose their stuff :laughing7:

Nice job on the Oldies Kirk

Bro,

Right when you said, "Thicky," I first thought that it was a 1793 Chain cent, but it was not to be at this moment in our detecting career. You found something that we seek every trip out! I'm just glad that the obverse was perfectly identifiable!

Let's hit it again next Sunday! We must hit 30 period coins from this field...We must!

Thanks, Don, I even said to Kyle in the field, "Don will appreciate this one." This site is now up to 28 coppers. We just need a silver now. Typical for this state, unlike Virginia. :D

Beautiful chuck of copper. Will you be looking to clean it some in the near future? Looks good now but is it a coin you would want to clean some more?

And congrats on a couple sweet finds...very good condition both, to be sure.

Diggity Dug,

Hey, bud, thanks for the reply. You know we never go anywhere without our passions and detectors. :icon_thumleft: KKC will be looking forward to getting permission for some new sites this fall. If Kyle's blubbering is any guide, we should surpass 100 coppers for the group. We had 71 last year and are at 40 now. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

I can't wait to see your finds from the richly historic fields of North Carolina. You won't disappoint, my friend! :headbang:

Too much of something to have coppers flinging out of their coin pouches. :D

Awesome Liberty cap, It has some nice detail left. Must have been in nice shape when the patron dropped it after drinking a few.
