Gotta clean it. You're NOT going to hurt a copper that's been in the ground for over 230 years. Heat some peroxide and loosen and flake the corrosion off. Then use a toothpick. Don't listen to the "don't clean it people". Drives me nuts on this site!

Maybe it’s my imagination, but I can see the sails from the boat on the coin, so I think you have a match! I hope you are well. Scary times around here!

It does look like most of the "material" and minerals from the soil are actually fused to the surface of the coin. He may lose some detail, but at this point, what does he have to lose?
 

I have a decent pile of unidentifiable big ol coppers. Annoying they are lost to time and rotted away.
