Had a great day of hunting at the Fields Of Legend today. It is still producing meager finds but great stuff. I took my time working areas that were hit hard already with my DFX running as hot as I could get it, without it going haywire. Smalls were coming infrequently but deep. A high signal in a very tight spot stopped me in my tracks, it was deeper then I thought, out of the second shovel this thicker than normal coin pops out. At first I couldn’t see any of the detail on it. I put it in a protective sleeve and worked my way over to Tombac who was hunting with me. He had just finished finding a large cent, I pulled the coin out that had dried somewhat showing it to him, I could of swore I was looking at flowing hair but wasn’t sure. I broke out my loop and literally fell over, holy crappola!!! It was the coveted 1793 Flowing Hair large cent, Wreath with Vine and Bars. I turned it over and could barely see the wreath. The quality of most of the copper coins coming from these fields was bad to worse, for any detail to be left on any coin this was the one the field gods spared from frying completely. What a great hobby… 9 buttons, one a blowhole, watch winder and a very odd clog clasp and smalls.

Awesome coin! I think I'm in the 1700s too. I got a draped bust large cent but the dates toast I do know it's 1796-1807

I think banner!

ARTY You think that's a period lead pencil on the bottom of the photo? I think it maybe. WTG!!!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and banner votes. I'm still on a flowing hair high. Thought it would just be the one I read about. Goes to show you just never know... Art

Nice recovery's, that is sweet dirt fishing

Great find Art, congratulations:occasion14:

You have just added to the legendary status of that field in a big way (if that's possible).

Thanks Steve, it definetly is a great addition to all of our hunts on these wonderful fields. This site is very special and will continue to slowly give up its secrets. Looking forward to the hunt...

I think this post deserves a nice little bump. It's not everyday someone finds a 1793 Cent!

Thanks for the bump. Philadelphia Mint records show that 63,353 Wreath cents were struck. Replacing the first chain cent design. For those of you not familiar with this rare coin, here is a site with information and the history of Americas first large cents.
http://www.coinsite.com/coinsite-pf/pparticles/01cwreath.asp I know my flowing hair isn't in the best of shape, the date is there and so is most of the detail. I'm extremely lucky to have found this rare coin in any shape. Art
