1790's Wayne's Legion Pewter button with fully intact shank and other goodies!!!!

I don't like to hunt too much during the summer, mainly because it's too danged hot and today was no exception. My cousin and I were recently granted permission to the remainder of a property that we got permission on early in the year. It's directly across from a previous site we detected for over 2 years and we really didn't need to do research, because we already knew the history of the area. Today we hunted together for about 5 hours in the blazing heat. I ran out of water around noon so I was dying, but the site is unbelievably loaded with signals. Mainly buttons. I managed to snag an 1818 large cent and several buttons and other odds and end buckles and such. The real doozy was the beautiful pewter Wayne's Legion button. It's in great shape with a fully intact shank standing straight up. I'm anxious to return to this site when it cools down a bit. And if you aren't familiar with Wayne's Legion I urge you to read about it. History | Wayne's Legion I haven't seen too many of these buttons posted and more so a little more strange to find them in Virginia. Thanks for looking and HH!

Wow Matt - that pewter button is in unbelievable condition not to mention the great history behind it. I'll have to admit I'd never heard of Wayne's Legion. Makes you wonder if there are any more of those to be found at your site, and how they came to be lost there. Super nice find!!

Very nice digs, great site no doubt.

Cool find. That's the 2nd Wayne's Legion button to turn up lately.

My cousin found the other. Same site, about 50 feet from each other. We hope to find more!

If you found 2 theres probably a few more there to be recovered. Nice handful (literally) of finds. I hunted today as well and the heat was awful. Had 6 quart bottles of gatorade and drank 3 of them and still got light headed and had to rest in the shade for a while before I drove home.

yep heat was miserable. love the button, really cool and all that good stuff. history is so cool, so much we that we only get the smallest of glimpses of and yet very important and valuable in various ways

looks like a great site, my father had a historical property south of Charlestown back before i got into Mding.:BangHead: and i no i missed out on great stuff, cooler weathers not to far off,, enjoy

Awesome button!!!

Great day indeed! This site just keeps producing!! I'm loving it :)

Your button is awesome, a little better looking then mine!

Amazing Find! Where there's 2 there's bound to be more!

That is an excellent example of a Wayne's Legion button. I have only ever found one and it was in poor condition. I have been looking for them for years here in SW PA. I have been to Legionville, where Wayne's army trained for a winter before heading into Ohio on the Fallen Timbers campaign. This was the first formal basic training facility for United States troops. It is just down the Ohio river from Pittsburgh. Wayne moved the army away from Pittsburgh to get the men away from the taverns. I have also been looking for the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion camps in SW PA - there should be some of those buttons in those camps even though they were mostly militia without federal uniforms.

Hmmm... might just be a discarded tunic or jacket disintegrating somewhere on that property which the buttons came off of. Like some other posters have said, if there's two of these buttons there there may well be more. I'd grid the fool out of it and do a thorough search just to be sure.

We have just begun at this site. There were 3 buttons just around the Wayne's legion button. I am leaving the gridding for a cooler day. It's fun diggin sites like this, but that heat wears you out quick. We will update you guys on future finds!

Truly amazing site . What was located on it?

Thanks for the input, Steve. My cousin found one just days before on the same site. I was so pleased to see how excellent the condition was. Pewter buttons are a hit and miss I know. They are either great or in horrible shape. I hope my cousin and I find a few more of them.

My best guess as of right now is a small 1700's-1800's home site. Appears to be a typical home site.

Matt that is a dream site that you and Ryan are on! Congrats on some fantastic colonial finds. I just had a nice colonial site and hunted it until I had no more signals then switched my T2 SE to all metal and pulled out a few more keepers that I couldn't get to in disc. I hope you fellas find a couple more of those scarce buttons.... They're awesome. It's really cool that you both found one instead of one of you finding both. Can't wait to see the rest
