1786 "VERMONTENSIUM" Updated Pics WOW!

It's been a long dry spell for me but today changed everything. My brother and I decided to try exploring for a new spot and found a DANDY! After following a stone wall deep in an area we've always had good luck in, we came across a foundation we never knew of. 15 mins into it I found this. Right outa da ground I could read the date! I knew I had a fabulous coin that was going to clean up nice. I have only hit it with water and a soft toothbrush but WHAT DETAIL! The scans still show alot of crud, but holding it in my hand under light it LOOKS MINT! I MEAN MINT!!!!! Every tiny detail shows! The leaves in the damn trees even! Every letter, the eyes in the sun,the small little lines in the back support for the plow, the lines in the rays around the eye. EVERYTHING IS SHARP. And you should see it under magnification! If you look at the pic in the Red Book, thats exactly what it looks likeand maybe even better. I'm not kidding. I'm afraid to put it in peroxide so I need it proffessionally cleaned. It looks like it was just minted. Struck on a beautifully round planchet and very well centered.(as alot of vermonts were NOT). I still don't believe it. I was shaking when I started to look at it right out of the ground. Had to have a smoke to calm down. If you guys could see this thing under light you would freak. I'm going to definitely have it proffessionally cleaned. Anyone recommend where I can send this to? I currently have an order being graded at ANACS and can usually come close to most grades. This one HAS to be VF or better! The scanner I use sucks. The first 2 picks are from straight out of the ground. The next are after water. Oh ya, found some other stuff too! LOL- AWSOME link Evolution.

The bottom three were gone to begin with. The washington would be a tough call but if you're happy with it probably better left alone. I have hundreds of large coppers like those crustys, just nothing you can do, it was the detecting God's call that day and he said tough luck son but come on back tomorrow and try your luck again.

PS... Did those coins look like the Vermont after just brushing and water? :D Of course they didn't, I know that just seeing the final result. It's not the peroxide dude! It's the rotten dirt we have.

haha I just read your post again and realize even the bottom ones aren't cleaned. Well good call, they are as good as they're gonna get.

That's a awesome coin Hogge.

Looks like it would clean up well. I'd clean it in cold peroxide and gently tooth pick it. Once again congrats on a nice find.

Wow, Hogge. Even without looking at the Redbook I can tell that is an AWESOME find! :icon_cheers: That is what is so exciting about hunting in Massachusetts. You come across coins like this that are almost impossible elsewhere. I see a vacation next summer in the Berkshires! :D ;D ;D

Ok, just checked. I think it's safe to say this will make the Banner. $1200+ coin I would estimate. Wow. Sure beats Nate's "half dime" pocket spill. ;D ;D :icon_sunny:

Bob

I hate to say it, but for $1200, SELL SELL SELL

Bob OH.....It's going to auction alright. Always said if I found something like this it's being sold. Been making phone calls already. The dirt is starting to flake off on it's own and has some patina, but believe it or not, it also has alot of brown patches along with the patina. I still can't believe how well this thing is preserved! The soil in this particular spot was VERY kind. I'll keep everyone informed on exactly what I do with it and what it sells for. We are hitting this spot again on Sunday with my brother, my sister, my middle daughter age 7, and Golden1. We will follow the hunt with lots of pics. Good Luck to ALL of you!

...and let me guess, if you were to get that much you would spend it on a new detector... to try and find the coin you found and sold. :D

I would have to keep that one but that's just me. :icon_pirat:

I understand the decision to sell it but I'll be honest....I couldnt come close to parting with mine. I love this coin. Makes me all tingly inside every time I look at it. I will look forward to see how much you get for it though. Just purely out of curiousity to see what mine might fetch if I ever change my mind.

My brother says there's nowhere left to go around here, but goes to show there's still stuff in the ground everywhere.
Once again, GREAT find!
Steve

I just say that to keep you inside.
