1785 CONNECTICUT COPPER & A RARE ONE PIECE EAGLE BUTTON * RV-35

sittin home looked at the clock..11 am.what to do? a little voice said go up to the very 1st cellar hole that ya took Dan on your very 1st cellar hole hunt!
so off I went..slow going at first. diggin everything. a lot of iron,a horsehoe, square nails, then a colonial barbecue fork! i mean i've dug colonial meat forks before and they were small but, this one takes the prize! then a tombac button, then kicked and rolled some rotted trees and got a bigger flat button(so I thought) a shoe buckle frame at 10 inches.a butter knife blade with "best steel" stamped into it.last target was 8 inches deep and sounding real nice.dug down and much to my suprise a pretty nice 1785 Connecticut copper.conditions were just perfect, ground was nice & damp. alot of machines including mine have attacked this site and it just goes to show ya that even if ya think a site has been pounded, there's always a keeper or 2 left somewhere.
hoping someone can ID this button.it looks like a rock scraped the eagles head.not sure if this happened while digging it? no back mark. it's a RV-35 very rare Diplomatic button..I wrote to William Leigh to confirm this
72 coppers on the year

Hey Dave . The Conn. copper is in great shape but the find of the day is that early diplomat button . I find it Referenced as : Albert O11A. Described as " eagle in flight facing right to olive branch , bolts of lightning in left talon, 24 mm one piece flat button no backmark manufactured before 1820 . Also listed as very rare ! Another super button for your collection congrats ! MaineRelic
thanks man!

If I had found and posted the button it definitely would not make Banner ! LOL ! You might have a chance though. I have never seen one posted on here. Rarity is a plus ! Value is harder to set than a known enity ie. Washington button. The banner gods can be fickle. Umgolf recently found his first gold coin and did not make banner :icon_scratch: Herbie's recent Mass silver tree coin did not go to the top either :icon_scratch::icon_scratch:. Who knows with Tnet now ? The short answer is yes it is banner worthy ! In all likely hood we will not see this button dug and posted ever again . MaineRelic
yep very sad! all those were soooo banner worthy.doesn't make any sense!

Bev you are doing great! keep at it! Still wanna do a hunt sometime if we get down that way!

Uhhh....Of course! I've got fresh batteries and plenty of orange to wear- Hubby still wants me to wear the deer antler hat that he gave me but I'm not sure why...:icon_scratch:

I pay attention to the buttons & its the first I remember being posted on Tnet - CONGRATS

Looks like you have a great day out there ! Very impressive finds !

Outstanding button Dave! The copper is a beauty and the fork and knife are both pretty cool.

Great finds! Nice button

KILLER button, and a great copper too!

No doubt a super find on the button and on the good conditioned 1785 CT copper!

Don

Diplomatic buttons of any caliber are considered rare finds. I owned a small cuff example that set me back $400, and that was 20 years ago. if this helps any.

If it were possible to get copper poisoning...... you would have it bad!! I must agree with several posts above that sometimes the button finds out rank the copper finds. Killer button for sure!

There's some pretty rare 1785s, just too bad a nicer one like this is only very scarce (R4), but that's still not too bad. I see both finds as pretty equal.

It's not you finding the coppers, they seem to find you. That button is gorgeous.

sry no help on the button......but nice hunt and awsome photos as usual.....thankx
