1780's homesite and civil war battlefield finds!

I have been hunting 2 spots in mw spare time the last 2 weeks...here are the better finds. They include 179? large cent (my oldest find so far):headbang:, an 1888 indian, 1889 seated dime, 1911 v-nickel, #267 cattle tag?, a silver medallion reading "given for Merit from yhe institution for the deaf and dumb and the blind...May 31st 1853..... Also pictured are some civil war items found including several bullets, an eagle coat button, a union eagle breast plate:hello2:, a camp knife with spoon and two other unidentified items, one is copper the other silver plated???? Any ideas? This is only about half of the iron items dug inluding axe heads, an early hoe head, several horse and mule bits, horse shoes, etc... One of these sites was a homeplace dating to around 1780 that was used as a Union camp during the war. The other is a farm field adjoing a local battle field....Also not pictured are 3 tokens, a 25 cents general store token and two mercantile tokens 5 cents and 1 dollar. Thanks for looking:icon_thumleft:!

Looks like a great virgin site you've got there. A couple of those coins look to be in pretty nice condition. Great job on digging some really nice stuff!

Wow! That "Awarded To" badge is really cool. Can you post a better close up?

Awesome finds Digger! I would be making a lot more "spare time" in the future!

I will post some better pics of the silver badge when my camera batttery charges.....thanks.

The very green item on the lower right is a door or trunk lock key hole. I'm not sure of the other item. Maybe a broach?

Very nice.Congrats.HH.

Awesome bunch of finds! Congrats!

You've got a fantastic collection of finds there. When an eagle breast plate isn't clearly the top find in the bunch, you know you have done well. I look forward to seeing a close-up of that personalized 1853 silver medallion, that is a special piece. It may be just me, but something doesn't look right about the seated dime. The coloring looks odd. It would be great to see a close-up of that as well.

Here are better pics of the badge...and terpfan, all the silver from this area is dull-looking not shiny like most dug silver. The dirt is very mineralized and dark looking. Have to run GB at mid 90's on my ATP which is very high for this area...DSC06145.JPGDSC06146.JPG

Also, i knew this field was going to be good when i found the seated dime 2 minutes after ground balancing....also found 5 or 6 flat buttons of different sizes and a 5 gallon bucket of iron not pictured...gonna hit it again in the morning.

Amazing finds, great job!

Thanks all....and happy hunting!

Hey jewelerguy, the Bear family is very well known in this area, according to ancestry.com and his grave stone he would have been 58 in 1853. So this could be his son?? He was listed as dying in Augusta county which is where the school is located from 1840-present. Very interesting since my research coudn't tie him to the school..... thanks alot.
