I believe I have found a Machin Mills counterfeit cooper. He produced these coins between 1786 to 1789 in Newburgh ,New York.
He copied the British half penny, but of a lighter version and dated them all differant dates with the earliest being 1747, but most were dated with a date in the early 1770's. I have the original British half pennies from the 1700's and this coin is lighter and does look a little odd compared to them. Sorry if pics aren't the best thanks for reading. Oh I do live in the Hudson Valley of New York not to far where these coins were made and it was found on July 4th this year first chance to post.

Thanks,

Re: 1700's counterfeit cooper

cool find.....to me that would make a cool find do to the fact it is a fake made so long ago :icon_thumright:

Re: 1700's counterfeit cooper

That is cool. I hope someone can verify it is one of the fakes. Could be more valuable than the real thing.
Cool find.

Re: 1700's counterfeit cooper

Well, If I were you I would be changing the title to 1771 Machins Mill Halfpenny found! Congrats on what looks like a 3-71B variety of the Machins Mills coppers. ( A ground found one sold for $150 recently, so they do have value)

For those who use the word "fake", well, counterfeit is more appropriate and these coins did circulate freely and nowadays a Machins Mills copper is worth a whole lot more than a comtemporary British made counterfeit and Regals are not even worthy to be collected by most unless in outstanding condition.

Hello and thank you to all who have looked and replied and Don I took your advice and changed the title.

Good going on changing the title, that helps in distinguishing what you found for those doing searches and improves the viewing of the post. I hope most realize the by far the vast majority of King George coppers found are NOT Machins Mill Halfpence and when one is found it deserves to be acknowledge that it is a great find.

Out of many King George coppers myself and my son have found over many years, he has yet to find one and I have only found one, and possibly a new variety second one.

Again, congratulations on finding one, also finding one in pretty decent condition to boot..........

Again thank you all for the kind words. I had found a decent amount of 1700's King George coppers and when I found this one it just felt and looked different in the field and when I got home and looked in my coin books there it was. Well thanks again and happy hunting to all.
