Fair warning to everybody.... This will be a long post. If you want to skip to the pics I don't blame you. This hunt was a very special one to me and involves a site that has a connection to one of my ancestors. I almost hate to admit how many hours I spend doing research. It's a stupid amount and a huge time commitment. I spent 4 months working 7 days a week in Stowe Vt last fall. I had no time to hunt for months. But I spent my nights trying to stay awake and do some research. From this research I have lined up quite a few sites. This particular site was a log cabin that belonged to the business partner of one of my ancestors that landed here in the 1700s. David and Thomas owned a mill together. Thomas's log cabin was close to the mill and had an "office" of sorts where the two would conduct business. This bit of info was found in some of my moms extensive geneology collection. I recently found a map from 1751 that showed the mill and Thomas's home close by. David(my ancestor) lived close by on the top of a nearby hill. These maps are very rough and just show crudely drawn houses in the vicinity of where the actually were.
Fast forward to last night. I got home from a long week of working in NH. My T2 SE had returned from its upgrade and I was shocked to see that First Texas had basically replaced everything. That machine was destroyed when I sent it out. It's been dripped a million times, stepped on a bunch, and taken two brief falls into the ocean....with me attached. I'm pretty sure the machine has not been right for a very long time. So this morning I picked a site and headed out. The machine ran great and I found an early copper. Great day already. After a few hours I decided to go somewhere else. I knew I wasn't far from the mill site. I figured what the hell, I'll see if I can locate an iron patch. Maybe I will get lucky. I parked my truck and headed out through the forest. These log cabins had no cellar holes so there is zero visible sign of a home. You just have to get lucky and hit the iron patch. Just a few minutes in I hit some iron. Got a high tone and pulled a copper....then another and another. Then a beautiful pewter shoe buckle (the pictures do it no justice), then several more coppers. I was so excited that I had found the home site of David's partner. I'm guessing this was the office area with all the coins. I kept hoping a Spanish silver would pop out. Sure enough a nailed a gorgeous 1749 Real with incredible detail and a great even dark toning. I also dug a really thick rat tail spoon in great shape. It's amazing to think one of my ancestors may have touched something that i dug today. I have barely scratched the surface here and can't wait to get back. When I finish this site I will attempt to find the site of my ancestor David. He too had a log cabin that will have no visible sign.
This has been a damn tough week with the Tnet happenings. But I have a great life with a ton of great people in it. Lots of them on this site. This day was exactly what I needed. Best of luck to all

Just so you know I'm starting a petition to ban you for posting these legitimate finds. I feel it's only going to get worse and we as a forum must stop you now.

Lol hey man you only stand to break even this year. You won't even have to send me that funny looking dollar coin. I loved it when you said "your finds don't look good enough to be fake". Never thought I'd be so happy that my digs are so nasty looking out of the soil.
And yes it's going to get worse. Don't say I didn't warn you about this. I was coming out swinging this year. Having a machine that's actually doing what it's supposed to do helps immensely. Pretty sure the two trips into the ocean didn't help that thing at all

Man them coins are purty! Loving the condition of them.

Thanks Basinpall. Once in a great while you find a site with nice sandy soil. I hunt a lot of river areas so I've been fortunate with this a few times

Some amazing finds there Bro. Your extensive research definitely paid off. I hope you can locate that second site as well. Best of luck to you.

Thanks man. Yeah that will be quite a thrill to discover David's cabin site

So you're not doing a paid hunt in Maine? ;) Might have to bump back that Pine Tree thread. :laughing7:

Thanks buddy. Felt great after such a weird and stressful week

Thank you. New York has incredible early history. It's a shame that so much has been developed over. I am so lucky here in Maine that a lot is left undeveloped

LOok at this Abe. In the subway TODAY, I was admiring a wall built by the Dutch, uncovered while building a subway line in the late 2000's. It was re-assembled into the original wall, into a subway wall.

That's pretty damn cool. We have some amazing stone walls around here

Finally got around to looking at the pictures and reading your post! Holy moly! That is a wonderful outing and like someone else said, a rare find as it appears to be virgin.
Hope to see more. Rat tail pewter is a great example!

Thanks Russ. I'm going to see if I can locate more of these cabin sites as they are tough to find with no cellar holes. 98% of people just look for the obvious foundations. These are hard to locate but the payoff can be incredible. The other good part is that a lot of the really early places were constructed in this manner. Best of luck to you buddy

Many of the early cabin sites in Western PA did not have a cellar hole either. They can be tough to find. You have to look for a spring, or if in a plowed field, look for the ceramics.

Looking closerr at the quality and quantity of the coins from this hunt, I feel it is a banner HUNT, and will enter a vote for it. Maybe a nice group shot of the coins will help.

Thank you buddy. This was certainly one of the funnest hunts I've ever had. Not my best or rarest finds but a lot of solid early finds. I will get a group shot up. But let me just say this. I have said in the past that in my opinion the BANNER should be reserved for the most rare and special finds. I don't ever want to be a hypocrite. I personally don't believe this is BANNER. But it sure was a personal BANNER for me to dig these at this site.

Lol you would be very disappointed quite often my friend. The sun shines on a dogs ........well you know the rest

OH what fun !

I have a had a few double digit copper days, and it IS fun when they keep popping out.
Getting them in better than average condition is quite a bonus, well at least half of them.
There is little doubt you will have a couple (few) more productive hunts in that area.

About the wet detector, if you go on anymore kayak trips get yourself a dry bag for it.

The ground is thawing out now (soon) around here so I'll be digging soon too.

Good luck out there.
