1700's small SWORD quillion block.. NEW PICS!

Hey, I picked this up at a park in NY last year and never knew what it was... You can see the face engraved on both sides.. I think its a dagger but Im not sure.. Any ideas would be appreciated and I was curious to the period too.. Thanks Jeff

UPDATE-- thanks to those of you who helped.. It was posted on swordforum.com and id'ed as a quillion block from a small sword in the 1700's :headbang:

UPDATE 2-- wanted to add some new pics after I scraped a little crud off this beauty.. I tried to give more of a 3-D idea of the face on both sides... If you notice, its not exactly the same figure on both sides.. It looks like his mouth is open on one side and closed on the other

Re: DAGGER?

It does look very much like the broken hilt to a dagger or more likely sword (rapier), possibly 18th century. It's interesting that the outside casting is very much like the object posted here a while ago ( http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,284954.0.html ) which might also be the "joint" between handle and what went beneath it (maybe wooden salad spoon or fork in that case)

thanks johnny, like i said, it was always just a very odd piece and I've often wondered... i thought it might be a 17th or 18th century dagger hilt but I'm not good with id'ing things at all.. jeff

Re: DAGGER?

Jeff, any chance you might knock some of the mud out of the inside? (I understand f you don't want to, because i get "attached" to some mud on my relics sometimes :D) If you do clean it out though, it might possibly show a round area in the central part of the casting (possibly to confrom to the blade's shank) which might help to i.d. the other relic who's link is above.

Re: DAGGER?

Ok, I hope this helps... the 1st is the top.. you can see down towards the bottom a bit of an oval shaped hole that is formed by a platform inside near the bottom... 2nd and 3rd pics show bottom.. 4th is other side view

Re: DAGGER/SWORD hilt?

That's what it looks like to me--but you should post it on this forum:

http://www.swordforum.com/

That site is crawling with sword experts from all over the world. They will likely be able to tell you whether it is a hilt or not, and if it is a hilt the will probably be able to narrow down the age of the item to within a decade. Heck, they even gave me a list three possible manufacturers for the piece I posted there last year.

Cheers,

Buckleboy

A lot of forums have a limit on starting threads, usually to prevent spamming. You usually have to make five of so posts first...

Maybe they have changed the settings since I got my membership...I was able to post immediately after getting an account. :icon_scratch:

I would offer to post it for you, but I can't remember my password or user name now... I will try to dig it that information out.

Re: DAGGER/SWORD hilt?

I can post this photo for you on the sword forum if you like. I just need an "ok" from you to post your photos anywhere else. I did find my ID and pw for the forum. I haven't tried to post anything yet, but it looks like I am able to post.

Let me know. I am happy to help.
