1700's silver teaspoon - RESTORATION PICS ADDED

Hey All,

Ok, so I was watching an episode of the Pawn Stars today and they had on a BEAUTIFUL Paul Revere silver spoon that was worth quite a bit,
it sparked my memory and I said out loud "hey, I found an old spoon from a site the other day ... I wonder ..."

Now I did find it at a colonial spot that we collected a couple good coins at including a nice spanish one reale. At the time it just looked
like an old, bent metal spoon, we find lots of them - usually in pieces, I put it in my pocket and never gave it a thought ...
I think that day too we each found a copper or two so those were on the top of our minds.

So digging thru my "junk" pile at my work bench I found the spoon and started cleaning it a bit ... I started seeing some nice engaved detail ...
then some initials ... and then the hallmark ... well it's not a Paul Revere spoon but it did turn out to be silver - "coin silver" I believe from my research
(meaning they melted down silver coins to make it) and even though it's bent, it seems to be intact and not broke or anything.

The hallmark reads "A REEDER" who I found was Abner Reeder a silversmith from the late 1700's in Philadelphia - VERY COOL PIECE !

I also included the draped bust half cent I found yesterday with Paco - it was COLD and the wind was howling but was nice to get out and get some fresh air.

I thought you guys might enjoy it - take care,

vp

PS: now, the spoon is REALLY COOL - but is it bad that I keep thinking about the silver coins they melted down to make it ???

UPDATE 03/05/11: Well I FINAAAAALLLY got my colonial spoon back from the silversmith I sent it to. The place I sent it was the worst, I won't say the name or get into the details but it was not a good experience. I was pleased with the end result though so I guess I can't complain too much.

What do you guys think ?

I would definitely say they did a great job, Kevin. I am glad you decided to get it restored. Now it will be a great display piece for others to view. :icon_thumleft:

The bowl was well done, but I'm not a fan of shiny silver I like how yours had the black in the cracks etc, but it will tone again :icon_thumright:

yeah i wasn't happy with that either when i got the package today ... but it's probably my fault, i looked at the original email i sent them and i told them i wanted it "restored" instead of maybe "repaired" ... wish they would've asked though, i mean it's 200+ years old and looks brand new now :dontknow:

i guess you live and learn ...

take care,

You could use SS way of aging it. Plain bleach for 2 minutes, it turns black (without harming the metal) & you can buff off the high points. Its a good trick :icon_thumright:

That resto looks great too me. That is a great piece. :icon_thumright:

Re: 1700's silver teaspoon - RESTORATION PICS ADDED

I think it looks great just the way it is now . . . it'll tarnish up again before you know it! :icon_thumright:
You can always rebury it for 25 years to get the patina back! :laughing7:

I saw that same episode you wrote about, Paul Revere was also an excellent silversmith.

:icon_thumleft:

Great restoration. I also saw that Episode and there was actually 2 Paul Reveres who were silversmiths.....Anyways, A.Reeder was a terrific silversmith and it is a beautiful spoon! :icon_thumleft:

Re: 1700's silver teaspoon - RESTORATION PICS ADDED

That is seriously one nice spoon, and a great job of repairing.
I'd frame it in a nice wooden box and have that on the wall in no time.
The spoons I tend to find are the ones people have cooked with, in Merry Old Denver.
Seriously, a beautiful piece.

Nice work...sorry to hear that it was such a trying experience with the silversmith, but as you said the end result was the most important. Was the restoration very expensive?

Re: 1700's silver teaspoon - RESTORATION PICS ADDED

Wow I agree with Cru they did a great job on the bowl. That is a cool spoon.

Anyone know what that episode of Pawn Stars was? I have about 40 of them on the DVR, just don't get around to watching them enough.

Re: 1700's silver teaspoon - RESTORATION PICS ADDED

History lost and history found!! That is one sweet find. The restoration job looks splendid. Its a bit of history that you now own and can pass to your heir's. What a story. HHHH
