"found" where ? ? ?
In dirt ?
In Storage locker ?
In thrift store ?
In Garage sale ?
In abandoned car ?
In shipwreck ?
In Junk yard ?
In Tree ?
In Back pocket ?
In gum ball machine ?

? ? ?

And what OR who dated this ?

After quick research...

In 1793 Folche was said to have visited the old spring there on 14th street, but he was spanish. John Lee Williams described stumbling across the ruins of a plantation at Negro point in his 1838 book about his travels in west Florida. This was before the river had any settlements established. I believe that location is where the castle is up off 27th street. That structure was built in 1850, so not to confuse it with williams account from 38. PM me if you need more details. Great find though, the lack of patina does bother me somewhat, I have dug a lot from that neighborhood. So I wonder if it is an "heirloom" lost artifact rather than a "period" drop.

I also found these all around the buckle

It would be Good to see what else comes from the location of the buckle find. Anything to substantiate the dating of a possible early camp.....ceramics, buttons, coins. Otherwise it may be a tough one to verify, seeing that Gates did not settle here until 1842. A friend of mine would love to see that, he lives there a block from the spring and is always eager to see of new local finds. He founded the historical non profit there in the neighborhood.
