Located old tavern on my maps that was built in 1700. Literally, 1700! Got permission and went to work. Found a nice KG II 17??, United States Virginia halfpenny 1773, and a 1776 half Reale. Enjoy!

A little history about this 1773 Virginia half penny. The British Crown sanctioned the minting of these copper coins (appox. 700,000 at the Tower Mint in London) that then came across the Atlantic onboard the "Virginia" in early 1774 but did not actually hit circulation until 1775. After the Revolutionary War these coins along with newly minted U.S. coins were still used as currency for a bit.

No No No No No! That's an OUTSTANDING Virginia halfpenny! The first coin. By comparison is makes the reale look like dog food! They get pricey in the condition you found yours in! Way to go! Reale was minted in Mexico City.

Thanks for the id smokeythecat. Just updated my post and uploaded a sample. Learn something new everyday.

Yeah that's a Virginia Halfpenny alright! An incredible find in such great condition :occasion14:

Sweet coins, just what you would expect to find at an 18th Century tavern. Your VA Halfpenny would be 1773, not 1777.

Nice digs. Hope you can get some truly 1700 era finds from there in the future

I think that’s close to banner worthy....if I found it.

Let's see your trash!! Beautiful

Those coins are in a great condition! Nicely done!

The VA halfpenny is pretty awesome for a 250 year old copper. At first glance I thought the halfpenny was the silver you were talking about simply based on how well it was preserved, second glance I realized there was a half reale as well. Both are very great finds, congrats... you beat my loot for today... 2 wheaties, and 12 cents in more modern change.

Research paid off.
Well done

Yes, the Virginia Halfpennies in that condition bring some very decent bucks!

Check ebay. I'd guess $200, but I haven't bought one of these in years.

Thats what I would have guessed based on ebay, I didn't say anything though because I've never actually bought or sold one and I wasn't 100% sure.

Ebay's sold listings is a good place to look for competitive pricing. I now realize some of the 18th century ceramics I bought in the past are losing value quite nicely! People pay more for a little run around automatic vacuum, which has little power, than for an intact 18th century piece of Westerwald (German) pottery.

WOW! What an amazing site!!!! Great find(s)!!!!!!!:occasion14:
