I work at a credit union, and one of the perks is that I can keep an eye out for silver coins. Haven't found much till today...just the odd quarter or dime here and there.
But, I was lucky enough to get a pile of them the other day! My co-worker took these in and she didn't want them. So I gladly took them in. Worth around $75 in CAD for the silver right now. Might even ger a bit more if I sell to collectors because a lot of them still have lots of shine to them! It made my day! :)

My uncles father passed several years ago.. his father had several coffee cans full of silver coins. Uncle unknowingly took the coffee cans to the bank to exchange the "inconvenient coins" for paper cash only to realize years later that they were silver coins which is why they were saved in coffee cans :laughing7: .

Im sure the bank teller had a great day taking them in.

On the other hand, my grandmother worked at the cafeteria in a school and would cull the silver coins students payed with and swapped them in the till with clad garbage coins from her pocket at the end of the day. my father now has several coffee cans filled with silver coins.. but both of us know what they are... so they won't end up getting dropped off to a bank teller :laughing7:.

Very nice, its great to have an inside job like that, where you can enjoy other aspects of the hobby. I deal with 2 different banks now, and the tellers will actually call my phone number when they get in anything "unusual or old". Keep looking, stuff is out there.

Some great looking 67 quarters you got.
Worth more than silver.
Well done 👏

You think so? 🤔 not sure if I want to sell them or keep them.

Nice!! We know a guy who collects pennies, so we call him when we have rolls brought in. I'm not a penny collector, unless they are very old (which I haven't seen yet). The lady who deposited them apparently wants to come back with the rest...so I'll be on the lookout for sure!!

Great story! Thanks for sharing.

Well, I hope the teller who took your uncles coins knew what they were...so at least someone got the value from them. My co-worker didn't know...she just noticed they looked different...she would have rolled them and they'd have been shipped off. I told her they were silver and asked if she wanted some...she didn't...probably because she doesn't collect and she could see my excitment and wanted me to have them lol.

Crazy...I bet there was a whole lot more of them in your grandma's day. Pretty scarce nowadays to find them.

Good luck and happy hunting!

What year did Canada stop using silver for their coins? Nice score
1968 was the last year they made silver. Some 1968s are silver, some aren't. But all 1967 and under for quarters and dimes are silver for Canadian coins.

You did very WELL Thanks for sharing with us :)

it pays to pay attention, wtg

Working at a place handling money day in and day out, isnt it kinda difficult to pocket currency that is anything worth more than the actual realistic face value of what it really is? or do they kinda turn a blind eye if the till matches what came in at the end of the day?

I realize interesting things dont come in every week, just curious how the situation is looked at in general.

ive asked tellers time to time if they had any unusual coins like Ikes of half dollars and such but they were given to me in trade for face value.. only came across one silver in my limited visits to the bank.

I doubt that very seriously. More likely they can just swap it out for money in their pocket/purse at face value. As long as the total matches, the bank doesn’t care if it’s a paper dollar or four silver quarters. A dollar is a dollar to the bean counters.
