I 'found' this today in a thrift store. My wife and I then took it to a local jewelers and he tested it. Its real 14 K gold. He couldn't 'test' the pearls.

I had this on earlier today as a 'bidding' contest for two hours. No one even bid the starting price of 99 cents.

So I've decided to post it here and ask if anyone wants to trade something for it. Or if they really want it..make me an offer.

Congratulations Blacksheep. I still want to know how to tell a real
pearl if you dont have teeth. Jimbob

I suggest writing the company that makes Denture Cream.....elderly citizens get/buy 17% of all pearl jewelry...

Please see How to tell real pearl from a fake bellow...

"If you cut a pearl open, you will see its true nature. Natural pearls are comprised of layer upon layer of nacre. Cultured pearls have a shell (mother-of-pearl) core covered with a thin layer of nacre (generally no more than half a millimeter, usually much thinner). Fake pearls have a core with one or more layers of coating applied to them, which tends to flake away from the core upon cutting."

Frankly I would NEVER recommend cutting up any gemstone including a pearl....I mean...does this make any sense at all? Destroying the pearl?

My two cents.

well heres a tip real 14 kt gold --most likely a real pearl as well --- gold plated * stuff --fake pearl ---whos going to take a nice 14 kt necklace and put a el cheapo fake pearl on it? -- real pearls feel gritty to the teeth when rubbed against them since its dirt getting into their shell that makes the oyster ozee the "coating" that covers it to prevent it from bothering the oyster's flesh --- fake pearls are smooth to the teeth .

I'd say that was $5.00 well invested on your part :icon_thumleft:

When Mrs. Blacksheep opens the package...I think she'll agree with you!

Nice. How much does it weigh?

sounds like both parties got a good deal on this necklace !

The necklace was $3.50 but 50 % off...$1.75. It was a Christian Mission Thrift. I actually asked the clerk what the money was used for. Then I gave her $5.00. At the time I wasn't 100% certain in was 14K..so we took it to a local jeweler. Even though it is stamped 14k he tested it with the rub and solution. The pearls look nice, but who really knows?

Regardless...I am very happy that Blacksheep used his cerebral cortex and bid.

Great find, I go 2 the thrift stores alot u never know what your gonna find. :icon_thumright:

Wow,

That is crazy you found that at a thrift store. With the jewlery store saying its 14k and now you say its marked 14k I have to say the pearls are real. Reason # 1 Seperated by gold to protect them from smashing into eachother. Reason # 2 They dont put fake with real and real with fake. In other words the won't put fake stones set in real gold and. They won't put real gold with fake stones its a big no, no !! So two good reasons for it to be real, and the value of this thing is at least $300.00-$500 (USD). What a great find and buy for the persons who bought it.

You dont have to cut the pearls to see if they are real just look at the link I posted it shows how to tell just from holding them up to the light.

Nice find !!

Keep at it and HH!!

Seems I missed another Cappy deal :(
I gotta stop wandering away.

Congrats Blacksheep. Pearls are special :)

BTW, I totally trust the tooth test :)

I have found many pieces of jewlery that dont fit the (no fake with real) idea. Happens all the time. I get gold rings with fake stones. There is no set way to make jewlery, no real standards, specially with all the stuff from over-seas.
