Probably a maker's mark. If it looks like the one shown below, it's from Rio Grande Albuquerque, Inc., a major jewelry firm based in New Mexico. (More info at: http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m5092/is_n11_v15/ai_11736041 )

A second possibility is that it's a shortened mark for Rio del Oro, a trademark used since 1963 by the Alan Jewelry Co. of Providence, Rhode Island.

Thanks PBK, you've done it again!!!! How do you know so much. I mean I Google the Internet for various information, but you seem to have ti right at your fingertips all the time.
The mark you provided is the just like the one in the ring I found. So it's from Albuquerque?
