12 INCH TROMMEL BUILD

What setup with gold hog matting did you go with your sluice and how did it do on your tests.

Mustang you may want to read this thread. The first image of mats is not the configuration of mats I used. The key to using Gold Hog mats is sluice angle and water flow. These mats needs lots of water flow. I have been running the mats around 9 degrees and the water flow about 1" deep in the sluiice box. I used 4 different mats.

Looks Friggin fantastic! Way to go. A little clean for my taste but hey your going to fix that while catching massive amounts of AU! We went out this weekend and got some and I'll post pics as soon as I can.

The trommel will not look like that for long. After the first weekend it's all down hill for the looks. It will be all about recovering what Arizona will give up in gold.

AzViper, wow, very nice build and you deserve alot of credit. wish you the best of luck with your new toy and let us know how everything goes.

Thanks Maui... But the final stages only came together after Jay of Justbent stepped up and helped with the hopper and with that I have to thank Jay again. Everyone who has seen the trommel in person flips on the paint colors and the finished product. Just wish I had time to take out all the gear but with my father's condition I just can't venture to far from home. He has always been there for me, I have to be here for him on a given notice.

JAY THANK YOU!!!

Way to go AZ....with that kind of equip, you make....nuttin gettin past ya....viles will fill up fast.

THE VIPER-TROM IS DONE, READY FOR DIRT, ROCKS & GOLD!!!

Looks awesome. It's like having your child born. All the time waiting and now it's here. Congrats on that Keith. Now let's see this baby at work.
Sorry I missed ya when you were at Jays place. Next time. Let me know when you need help on the bucket line. Let's see how fast she moves.

I started this project last July and amazingly its nearly at the end. Was not my intentions to take so long but many personal and family issues arrived during this project. Final assembly is taking place today. Here are a few sneak peeks of the trommel. The desert sand powder coating is assume and Jay over at Just Bent had seen this color and I told him to go with it. I also want to publicly thank Jay for all he has done to help complete this project as he is going through some personal issues with his back and I know what its like to have disc's touching a nerve, painful and not pleasant. More photos to follow and the first running video will be posted in the next few weeks once I have a trailer. I may buy a 10' or 12' enclosed trailer from my sister once she is back in town.
I was wondering if you were going to get a trailer for this baby. That way it could stay stationary while transporting.

Garret I did buy the 12 foot trailer that has a ramp in the rear and a side door. I will not pick it until Oct. 7th. Then I will to outfit the inside to hold everything in place. It does have recess tie down in the floor to secure the trommel in place. Hope to be able to store/haul all my mining gear and camping gear in the trailer.

AZ youll enjoy having a trailer! I have a 16 foot enclosed trailer for my equipment / stuff and I still cant load all of my equipment / stuff. so what I don't normally carry with me got sold off.

Getting ready for another 8wk cross country prospecting trip and it looks like I may need a tractor/trailer rig :tongue3:
It's easy to pack if you are only doing one kind of prospecting but when it's a combination of lode mining in the mountains/desert, dry washing, metal detecting in the desert, placering in rivers and streams, as well as gem hunting in the Rockies, and camping the whole time it takes a lot of equipment and supplies.

GG~

Keith,
At one point in our builds we were discussing why that one trommel had a ring at the end of the classification area. I figured out why because mine now has one too. It helps hold the water in the dropout area and it also maintains enough rock to help with the clay busting. I also rearranged my spray bar so that the first ring section no longer has spray because I was getting too much backflow with the spray and the water coming in from the hopper. I Cut the amount of spray to each remaining ring section only having about 12-16 spray holes and added spray to the classification area to help the rocks bust the clay. The Trommel is usually set at 3 degrees and the sluice at between 8 and 8.5 degrees. Works beautifully.

Yuuup... I have seen many trommels without the ring at the end and a few with the ring at the end. I sent you a PM with some videos. In these videos he uses a ring but in an entirely different setup. Your correct that with a ring at the end will help retain the dirt for further action and retain the water, yet the rock and dirt will find its way out. I need to find a way to install the ring without welding. Maybe oversize it slightly and beat it into place then silicon to seal it.

Weld tabs on the ring and use machine screws and nyloc nuts to attach to barrel?

I know a few of you in here have raced the Baja 1000 or have experience in off-road racing. If you watch the video make sure you click on the HD link and select 1080p HD and expand it to full screen. Granted the video is staged but the trophy truck is for real. I have raced the Baja 1000 a number of times in my younger years and its something I cherish as its a wild race across some of the most deathless land you have every seen. Its dry, dusty, and fast.

Keith, I never raced Baja or any off-road stuff (at least not on purpose) but like you some of my fondest memories are of the time I spent in motorsports. Lots of escapades and excitement along with the brutally long hours. I do miss those days and people I worked with and came in contact with.

Buddy how did your 8wk trip turn out. As for me everything has been placed on the back burner. The trailer is packed with gear waiting for me to get out. Just have not been in much of a mode to do much.

WOW, just WOW. Great construction here! Not much you *could* add to this. So tell us, how does she work for ya?

Thanks for asking.

Honestly the trommel has not been put to use. Had some personal setbacks as well as work related setbacks. I have not been out other than to swing a metal detector. I have a new trailer with all my equipment inside waiting for when I can get out. My shoulder replacement I had thought went well but I developed a minor issue, but never the less I am having pain so prospecting has been on hold. It really frustrates me that I am having to put everything on hold but I have to deal with it and in time all should work out.
