I felt better once you posted about how long it took you to find your first gold.

It seems like some people around here are in sweet spot areas while others have to work at it harder. I guess being on the beach is a real advantage, people are always losing their rings when they go swimming in the ocean.

I have been hesitant to prospect in my area because I don't want to get myself trouble out of ignorance. I'm in Civil War territory and you don't want mistakenly get over into protected landmark areas. I think I'm going to have to hit the library and see what I can find out about my area and what has over grown the historic areas into publicly accessible land.

CONGRATS TOM!!! Awesome job on the gold coin coins, and making banner.
I can't imagine digging up a gold coin. A find of a lifetime I'm sure.

Double WoW! Simply beautiful!!! :o

Congrats! Nana :)

Obverse VF 35,reverse, XF 45, great find!

From what i see in the photo I would grade this coin as being a VF-25 at best
reason being the large scratch on the face of the coin.

Designer: Charles Gobrecht
Weight: 8.359 grams
Composition: .900 Gold .100 Copper (net weight .24187 oz pure gold)
Diameter: 21.6 mm redded edge
Mints: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco

VF-20 Very Fine: Liberty on coronet bold. Major lines show in curls on neck.
EF-40 Extremly Fine: Details clear in curls on neck. Slight wear on top and lower part of cornet and hair.

That is amazing, I think that you struck a gold mine!

Will be heading up towards CA this spring and hoping to plant a GPS system on you so we can track you.. ;D Great finds and wish you luck on your 12th Gold coin find. On the individual with the DFX, you should chip in and buy him a hand-held pin-pointer, White's does make hand held units which work great.
If your up for a hunt this spring, let me know and would be happy to hook up with you. I know some great places to detect, was born and raised in Redwood City and know the bay area very well.

My gosh! I can imagine it being something you never tire of.... :)

Congrats,

You know, I wouldn't care what condition a gold coin was in so long as I found it, LOL!! Yours is a truly beautiful coin. Congrats.

The only gold coin I ever found was a 1911 British Sovereign copy that was made into a pendant. At least it contained a quarter oz. of real gold (and the chain was 14K). Found it in a sandy playground near Balboa Park. Sad to say I sold it to a jeweler long ago when the price of gold was below $300. :( :(

Tom,

I've seen this thread more than once..and each time it always amazes me. THAT is ONE Gorgeous COIN!!!

Gold has such an attraction to us...I particularly love the heft of my little nuggets.

I am working on improving my detecting skills...AND I WILL Find me one (hopefully) one day. I know how much hard work contributes to those "lucky" finds.

Congrats on finding 11 of those beauties..I too would love to see all eleven displayed in a photo.

Best wishes on your NEXT 11!

Joe
