I found this pewter button with a circle of 11 stars. Does anyone know if this is military related or just civilian?

I know for CW buttons a lot of confederate stuff had 11 stars, not sure if it's related or just coincidence.

It's the size of a penny. Thanks! 20180306_224031.jpg

Nothing there really, I'm afraid to over clean...its pretty crumbly

Use that Elmers Glue & water technique. That is reversible & should hold yr button together.

I have never dug a pewter button , thought some 'Zinc' cents were a couple times tho. lol

Hmmm. I would probably guess that the stars are just a design used for decoration, and that it is a Civilian button made between the 1760's until the early 1800's (if it had an iron shank, I would put that date at around 1820 or 1830, if the shank was pewter I would put it at around 1800 or 1810). Great find, most of mine are blank!

That's kind of what I figured. Fits with the date range of all the other things I've found at this site. Thanks

I like your philosophy on the "not over cleaning". Once the patina is gone, it's just not as beautiful IMO. Congrats on the find!!
