$1000 COIN!!!!! No KIDDING!

Hello everyone! I’m just a little excited right now, as you can probably tell. I had a very productive day today metal detecting. Even though I only got out for about two hours to play, the detecting was good, no... It was GREAT! How many of you out there can say you’ve found a $1000 coin? I can, and not one but TWO in a lifetime now! *sigh* too bad that $ sign on the coin doesn’t denote “Dollars” though. No, unfortunately it denotes “Pesos” ... as in Mexican Pesos. Dang! It’s a really big coin though, and a blast to find and dig up. As I was saying, this coin find makes my second of this particular denomination. What are the odds? I mean a Foreign coin, a BIG one at that, found in two different cities. Lexington, and Versailles for that matter, are both a long way from Mexico after all.

Peso Comp.jpg

Yeah... that’s a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin shown there with that big Peso coin. I found that today too. One of only two surface finds for the day... and the other was plastic. <grin> Finding the Susan B pretty much right off the bat today as I walked from my truck to the particular soccer field I was going to grid search. Of course I was swinging my detector along the way and got a nice big loud and clear signal as my coil passed over it... Cool! A dollar coin to start the day, I knew it was going to be a good day no matter what. Oh and I wasn’t disappointed to be sure! You’ve seen the Big Honkin’ 1000 Peso coin already, but that would not turn out to the be ONLY big coin found today. At this particular soccer complex (park) I’ve found over two dozen different (and sometimes duplicates) of decision toss “flipper” coins. Those big coins that the referees use for their coin tosses and “decisions” for foul calls and whatever. Anyway, I found another one today. And it’s a match for one I found a couple of years ago too.

Flip Comp.jpg

Yeah I was walking on air after finding those three coins, but there were other coins to be found too. Sure, the rest were all run of the mill clad coins, but I’m not complaining about that one bit. It’d be nice to find more pennies that weren’t dissolving into the dirt right before your eyes perhaps, but I’ll dig pennies all day long if they’re there. Not many found today though, only fourteen. Odd that. No nickels, only Ten dimes, but there were fourteen quarters dug up to make it a nice round number for the finds bag. Coins where almost exclusively all that went into the finds bag today, well... aside from some can slaw and pull tabs that got dumped into the nearest trash can on my way off the field. Oh there was one lone plastic bottle cap (brownie point) I picked up for my wife, and one little set of wheels dug up that will make a fine addition to the World Famous “Fro’s Used Car Lot” . It’ll need some cleaning first perhaps...Along with everything else found today.

It’s amazing what a little water can do to the appearance of die cast metal and plastic.

Yep, The paint job is a bit scratchy, but it’s a fine set of wheels. <smile> And the coins cleaned up halfway decent as well. At least... well enough to be rolled up to be sold to the bank anyway... <grin>.

Clad.JPG

Okay, it’s not the biggest pile of clad I’ve dug up while metal detecting, but for two hours and with the addition to the big coins and the new car... I’m happy with it. It more than covers my gas to and from the hunt and I got a couple of big coins to add to my collection. A VERY good day indeed. Too bad I have to work all weekend, the weather is supposed to be wonderful here in my neck of the woods. *sigh* Oh well, I’ll have a week off over Thanksgiving to possibly get out and play a little...hopefully. Hopefully all the rest of you will find some time to get out and indulge a bit as well. As always... Good luck... and...

Were both the wheaties from the same mint? That would be amazing. <grin> Yeah the first time I found the $1000 coin... I was excited to say the least. Part of my brain said "Take it easy... don't get too excited..." but the rest of me was doing the happy dance and wondering how to cash that coin in for an exchange. <laughing> Yeah, with the devaluation of the Mexican currency, that coin would have been worth oh somewhere around 90 cents U.S. A far cry from $1000 dollars ! <grin> Finding the second coin, brought a smile to my face but I didn't get nearly as excited as with the first coin found. I guess I'm jaded now. <giggle> Still, you got to love this hobby... you never know what you're goint to dig up huh?

<laughing> Yeah... the last time I checked, about two years ago, that coin was worth just about ninety cents U.S. Not much to be sure, but it was still a blast to find. Who knows? Maybe I'll find another one and then I'll have a trifecta! The Three Amigos! Yeeeeeeeha! <dancing a jig around my sombrero> <grin> Never know what you're going to dig up with this hobby!

I would like... I would LOVE to think you were correct with the exchange and this coin, er rather coins, would be worth that much... but I think these are older coins that were "devalued" along with all Mexican currency years ago. If they were "New" Peso coins no doubt they would be worth the value you came up with. MAN! Don't I wish! Oh well, still a cool find in my book. <smile> Thanks.

in the late 1980s the the old mexican peso MXP went from 12.5 pesos per $1 us dollar down to 3000 pesos by 1993 * mainly due to the fact that the mexican govt just kept on printing more and more money to fund social programs * with no new backing in place (uh sound familiar folks?)

finally things got so bad that the govt "devalued" the money by lopping off -000's--- a old 1000 peso MXP coin was now a 1 "new peso" coin MXN in value with the new "pegged" exchange rate of 3 to 1 us dollar ( 33 1/3 cents in value --for the old 1000 peso coin in 1993 )

the "NEW PESO" is currently trading at 12 to 13 for a dollar (1/4 of its original "pegged" of 3 ro 1 USD value in 1993)--so 33 cents divided by 4 is about 8 or 9 cents american in current "modern" exchange value

that's some great finds! Looks like you had a very good day!! Hope your next is just as good if not better!

I hope so too, but it's snowing... *sigh* I don't mind the cold so much as the WET and cold. I usually hunt all winter long, but sometimes I have to confine my hunts to more agreeable "turf" as in WOODCHIPS!!! Sometimes they get a bit soggy too though and then freeze over. When normally loose woochips start to resemble frosty partical board (OSB or Oriented Strand Board to you woodsmiths out there)... well... The hunt will have to wait. Fortunately we usually don't get quite as much snow here in Central Kentucky as people and parts farther north.

Add up indeed! My detector has paid for itself four or five times over now. Six months after I purchased it, I'd found more than enough coin to pay for the detector. You got to love a hobby that pays for itself! It's the only hobby I've ever had that puts money back into your bank accounts. <grin> But that's only one side of the coin, so to speak. Every time I go out on a hunt with my detector, I find unexpected treasures and wonders. Like the $1000 peso coins, I've found coins from all over the world... Not bad considering that they were all in my back yard... geographically speaking. Wonder what I'll find next time?

Ugh! Can you imagine that happenning to the U.S. Dollar? One dollar being reduced to the value of the penny. YIKES! Of course it COULD happen... and what a shame. They say that it costs more then a cent to MAKE the Licoln Penny now, even if it dissolves in the dirt.

Hey Lady! How are you doing? Haven't seen you on here for a while, but then I've not been on all that regularly of late either I suppose. Between work, weather and other obligations, haven't had a lot of time to play I guess. And now winter is here with all the snow and soggy cold rains that go with it. It's Monday night as I type this and it's about 16 degrees outside... you could say the ground is a bit... uh... solid? right now. Tomorrow is a day off though and I might try to brave the elements and get in a short hunt or two... even if it's a tot lot somewhere. I've had one short hunt in the past two weeks and I've not posted that yet. Nothing much exciting really just some clad and one Chinese coin (or oriental coin of some nation) ... with a hole in the middle of it. <shrug> Still a fun find in my book. <grin> Anyway... good to see you are still out there and kicking.
