As a retirement present to myself, I bought a Garrett ATX used from Bart's Big Boy Hobbies. On my first day of use, I hit the mortarball at approximately 4 1/2 feet. As it weighed-in at almost 88lbs, it took 2 1/2 hours to dig it out and transport to the car. Cannonball Guy verified it on the "What Is It" Forum, so I was very happy that all the effort was worth it! Thanks for looking, N.O.

Thanks Turbo! To tell the truth, if I could find more, I'd dig a hundred more such holes! Therefore, I don't think it's that great of an achievement. The problem with the ATX is one has to dig everything, and just before my 4 1/2 foot hole, I dug a 3 foot hole to recover the bottom of a rusted bucket. Now that's the digging where there's no payoff just frustration with an aching back!!

That is a Great dig! That defiantly something I want to find. Great job!
Thanks Tony! Even after all of that time and effort, it was a great feeling finally just looking at it on top of the ground. Now, getting it to the car - no great feeling at all.......

I love it when the targets get progressively louder the deeper you dig! It's usually a good sign in my experience. Fantastic find!!

Very nice mortar ball! And fantastic effort to recover it. You will always have a great story to tell about this find. :)

Thanks DV! Right - Isn't that a wonderful feeling! You don't know if it will be an old can or something very interesting, so one's level of excitement (mine for sure) during that time usually is off the charts.

4 1/2 feet down. Sweet Jesus that is deep. You actually dug that far?? Man you deserve that cannonball. That is amazing. Cannonball Guy is the go to guy on cannonballs. He is a nice fellow and will help you out for sure. Congrats. That is my goal for 2015..I will find one.

Thanks Zaxfire. Yes, as you can see in one of my photos, I'm past the length of my shovel and still hadn't reached it yet. I've learned a lot from CBG. We're lucky to have him. Best of luck to you, and I hope you find yours too! Definitely makes the dig well worth it! N.O.

He lives at the hospital site.
Not sure exactly where the hospital was located TJ, but I did find an old photo of it on-line. Do you know if the structure itself is still standing?

SWEET mortar!

I'd dig a hole twice that deep for one of those beauties! Congrats!!
