As a retirement present to myself, I bought a Garrett ATX used from Bart's Big Boy Hobbies. On my first day of use, I hit the mortarball at approximately 4 1/2 feet. As it weighed-in at almost 88lbs, it took 2 1/2 hours to dig it out and transport to the car. Cannonball Guy verified it on the "What Is It" Forum, so I was very happy that all the effort was worth it! Thanks for looking, N.O.

Congrats man! That thing is BAD ASS

Congrats on recovering that cannonball. You deserve it after digging 4 1/2 feet to get it. I'd have quit after 2 feet. That's impressive that the ATX hit it that deep.

Nice find to say the least, but doubt I will be digging four feet for one, for me it would be some old sheet metal roofing every time lol !

La. is a iron bottom in some areas. Nice job
Funny that you mention that as the 4 1/2 feet were sandy, but the ball was half embedded in a clay bed that was extremely hard. I guess it went thru the sandy soil quite easily, but that clay bed stopped it. Thanks Texjim

Thanks Ahab - I always enjoy your posts. I would have to agree with your characterization as it almost was the death of me getting it out of the ground and to the car.....

Thanks Screwy! I was very pleased that the ATX picked it up at that depth and was happy that I bought it. Its drawback is that it hits on everything from a BB sized bit of iron to the 88lb mortarball. I know that I need to become more proficient with it, but I think that, as far as relics are concerned, it will have to be used in areas with little to no trash - not easy places to find!

I hear you CRM! On the same day, I dug approximately 3 feet to find the bottom of an old metal bucket! For relics, the ATX will be good in areas with little to no trash. Otherwise, there will be a lot of digging and frustration. Many Thanks, N.O.

Super find after a super effort!!!

Great shell! Can you say what war/action it is associated with?
