I got out for 2.5 hours today. biggest find was a smith and wesson revolver not too badly rusted I could read springfield mass on the barrel. 2 lbs of sinkers,2 ships spikes,2 fishing lures, and the longest brass screw I have ever seen. the slotted end is knurled and reminds me of the screw that holds the air cleaner to the carburetor on old engines.

Never seen an old gun as rusted as that one, I must admit. That's a very good find though. HH!

Sweet find on that revolver bud!!! :headbang:

Any chance that this thing could still be loaded and potentially explode?
Just a thought.

No, the chance is very minimal. Cartridges are stable, and exposure to the elements generally makes them pretty inert.

My question would be why that gun was thrown into the water; there's generally a reason people do that! Nice find though! :icon_thumright:

yep this very cool - a nice find congrats - would the handle have been wood - rotted away?
Having quite a deal of experience with bullets I think we can safely say that it won't explode! Interesting to see if any are still in the barrel too?

If you can see bullets in the cylinder, there is a very slight chance one could still be live, but as Hunthicks said I would think they are toasted and not live, it looks like they have been in the ground a long time. I would not hesitate to clean it. HH

water has probably rendered the cartridges inert, even if sealed they eventually get wet. the sheriff just picked it up about an hour ago, they will send it to a crime lab and if it has no incidents it will be returned. they will find the serial number to check if it was stolen and if possible run a bullet through the barrel to match up with recovered slugs from crimes.

I was actually hoping for a flintlock pistol, the first piece I felt was the trigger and the trigger guard, but surprise it is a smith and wesson. well if the sandbars can hide this they can hide a flintlock too.

happy hunting to all.

glad you gave it to the cops. who knows it might be the key piece of evidence needed to bring someone in. on second thought, it's in pretty bad shape, could they even get any info from it? IE serial # etc. I ususally just find toy guns. that must have been a surprise to pull that up!

oh yeah this gun will sing like a bird, a little electrolysis or pb blaster and voila. grip was either wood or rubber and long gone. why let someone get away with murder. damn right it went to law enforcement. imagine somebody hiding the gun that killed someone you love or getting caught with a murder weapon you didn't commit. it is the right thing to do.

thanks for all of the replies

Little gun oil, and your gonna be a cowboy! You could shoot beer cans down by the beach!

Glad to hear the cops are looking at it for possible crime weapon:icon_thumright:

My friend found a 22.cal pistol in a creek that someone most likely tossed for a bridge..Later,the cops told him it was to rusted out to find anything out about it to see if it was use in a crime..You did the right thing in turning it in.

Cool find. I think you did the right thing by turning it in to the police. Even if you don't get it back, you've got a interesting story and pictures to back it up. :icon_thumright:

Nice find to be sure. And even if you don't get it back, then you can have the satisfaction it may have helped solve a crime and either put someone in jail or get someone out who didn't belong there.

Found a trigger one time, that was the extent of my weapons finds. The whole she-bang would be grand.

Boy think of the stories you will have :icon_sunny:
