Went to one of those tot lots that has the new material put down so the kiddies cant get hurt. Oh well, no biggie. I'm not really into hunting playgrounds anyways. While my niece played on the jungle gym i swung my ace 250 around the grassy area which surrounded. Man I found A LOT of junk. I filled up an entire coffee can. The only keepers I had were misc coins of no value other that their face. Luckily I pulled out a beautiful CW bullet.
I showed a police officer who was hanging out in his patrol car in the parking lot when i was leaving. it might had been the first CW bullet he's ever seen. he couldn't believe the weight! he pulled a .40 out of his clip and compared the two. night and day!
If i had to guess, i would say it's unfired. maybe dropped on movement. But who knows. After Yankees lost the fist battle of Bull Run they retreated to DC. In fear of a Confederate pursuit, they built a dozen forts in Alexandria (my location) in order to prevent Rebels from marching on Washington. I was about a mile from one of those old forts..which is now a cluster of high rise condos. History is being paved over and forgotten more and more each day... :(
I'm thinkin its a 54 cal burnsides carbine. What do you guys think?

good luck to all!

Very nice bullet.. congradulations!!!
They are always a treat to find.
I'm not sure what kind it is, but at first is looked like a .69 caliber minnie ball.
You may be right on the ID.
Hopefully others will help you get the type.
You are right about it being dropped.
If you look in the cavity of the bullet, sometimes there is something in there that helps with the ID also.
Probably some more of those lying in that site!!!
Go gett'em!!!!

That bullet may be a .56 caliber colt for a colt revolving rifle.
Check the bottom and see if it is solid or has a small cavity... they were produced in both variations.
I may be wrong and hopefully if I am, others will chime in.
I don't believe it is a Burnside bullet, but again I may be wrong.
Felix

Thanks guys
Yeah there's a small cavity. Hollow pyramid (not to be confused with a triangular cavity like those french ones). Quite literally a "v-shaped hole". :headbang:
