Finally the ice melted and John and I were able to hunt today. It was a little cool and windy. The high was around 36 degrees, but the wind chill was much colder. We still had a great time and we made a few finds today. I dug a old ladies ring and part of a knife, 4 3 ring drops and a button. Not a great day but a fun one anyway. The ice storm we went Though was really hard on the trees, not to mention all the folks that lost power, including myself. My power was off for 6 days. Luckily I had a generator and I have propane powered fireplaces upstairs and down. We did OK but after awhile it got old not having any hot water. I was able to power my fridge and television along with some lights. I also hooked up my well pump so we at least had running water. The devastation encompassed a huge area, several states. I imagine the Amish folks were amused by some of the people that were so helpless without any power. We had plenty of warning but some folks didn't make heed the warning. We still have several thousand people without power in the surrounding area. Good hunting to you all this weekend. Tsgman

You were rescourceful with your alternate power source, WTG. And thank goodness you heeded the warnings. People who don't are fools, IMO. Very nice stuff to find in on a cold day. I'd be happy to find stuff like that any day!! LOL HOw about a closeup of the bottle opener? I collect 'em.
I am not sure of the item you are referring to? If you are talking about the item on the top right in the 1st photo thats a toe plate. It was attached to the sole of the Union soldiers brogan or boot. It kept holes from wearing through the sole. If you are talking about the item at the very top of the first photo that is a old pocket knife. My hunting buddy John found both of those items. Tsgman

I'm talking about the very bottom item in the first photo. It looks like a bottle opener to me. I may be mistaken about what it is because I've never seen a bottle opener with large numerals on it, which is why I'm curious about it. LOL

I got ya, yep I can see how that certainly does look like a bottle opener. That item is a bird Tag, like on a carrier pidgeon, I was told thats what it was anyway. I actually found that a few weeks back and pulled it out of my pouch with the other stuff I found yesterday. Stay warm, Tsgman

Thanks for the clarification. I wonder what became of the pidgeon?! LOL

Great finds...Is that ring silver? Pretty pics of the ice laden trees but just be careful under all those limbs...stay warm and safe. Hope your power is back on soon.

Hi Gypsy, The ring appears to have some yellow tint to it, I will try to clean it up some and repost another photo. Tsgman

That must've sucked tsgman....I'm glad it's all behind you now.Someone just posted a tuning key for a banjo found at a CW site....Is that one at the top of the first pic?...Look's like a good day,Congrat's....

Hey Civil I hope you are having better weather than we are! If you are referring to the item just to the left of the pocket knife that is a piece that holds the shoulder scale togather. There is a picture of one at this site. Have a great day. Tsgman

Private's Shoulder Scales Attachments for Scales on Coat

Shoulder scales were worn as a dress distinction on the uniform coat and jacket of enlisted men of all branches. However, it is unusual to see them in period photographs being worn in the field. They were never worn on the sack coat. They were attached to the uniform by a tongue on the bottom of the scale, which slid through a brass attachment sewn onto the shoulder of the uniform coat that was called a scale slide. At the collar was a second piece called a scale button, which turned and locked the scale onto the uniform.

Thank's....Very informative....

Nice finds on a cold day, Tsgman. I lived in Springfield for 25 yrs....I know about the ice storms. Moved south to AR only 30 miles from MO line....we just missed the storm here LOL. You've got to love this hobby to dig this time of year....but when you find good stuff like you did, it helps take the bite off!!

Nice button. Looks like CW. Is it gen service?
The one at the top of the 1st pic is a Infantry button, my hunting buddy John dug that one. It was in very nice condition.
