Run and hide, another boring post of my metal detecting finds here in Arizona for the last two times out. Six old Wheat pennies, a couple of common tokens, Benji's dog tag, and some kind of medallion, 1927s Mercury dime, a few odds and ends of jewelry items, the one ring is marked sterling but missing all of its stones except 3 IMG_0001.JPGIMG_0002.JPGIMG_0003.JPGIMG_0004.JPGIMG_0005.JPGIMG_0006.JPG, and a metal 1920's Arizona drivers license. The license is the oval shaped copper tag with the hole in it to be carried on your key ring. It has seen better days but on the one side it says: Operators License number xxxxxxxx State of Arizona: and on the back it says: if found return to James H Kerby Secretary of State. I love finding these old artifacts and then researching them. Any help on the medallion would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what it represents. Thanks for looking and good luck out there.

Not boring at all!

The medallion is a 'knowledge award'. They were (and still are) sold generically to schools and institutions for customisation with inscriptions appropriate to their use, or the pupil to whom they are given. The usual symbols are the 'lamp of knowledge', the books/manuscripts indicating learnedness, and the globe as an indication of the breadth of knowledge. Like this:

Here's one of the many companies that supplies this kind of medallion:

car keys id tag

Really nice stuff!
That"if found return to" tag was used in the late 1920's to 40's, I believe....
My dad's tag, kinda just like yours says,
If Found Return -To- (his name, address and date of 1926) And Receive Reward

The back of my operators license tag just says, If found return to James H Kerby Secretary of state. No owners name or address. I checked others for Arizona online and they are all the same as mine. Is yours Arizona or another state?
