6FB3269A-F992-43E2-B774-A37D99988CA3.jpegDid some doorknocking with Bladerunner2019 and WV1978 in Mayberry today. I lucked up and dug a 1918 2 franc coin. It woulda been a day-maker for me anyways but I flipped it and noticed the letters on the back were pressed in and not raised like on the front. It says “Samuel r Pruitt, 2398382, 7th co 4th regt mech, air service, AEF my airy nc USA”. I am in shock and awe still.... to find a piece like it connected to Europe and NC. I’ve got some research to do and I’d love any input. I’m assuming he had this made while he was in France in 1918. The “air service was basically the Air Force before it was the Air Force and 1918 was the first year the went by that name. I’m questing these guys were working on our first war planes. Dude, that coin is an awesome find! That has to be really rare. I believe these were made as ID bracelets in the war. Love the buckle too. Awesome day of hunting buddy. That coin is a banner find in my book!

AEF stands for Allied Expeditionary Force. That's what they called the US troops sent to France in WW1. Super find. Gary

Congrats on getting out with the other boys.

That’s a killer find. Silver coin and military ID tag, all in one. I really like that piece a lot. Wow.

Since I didn’t find it, I encourage you to attempt a return. A token of such a historic event really needs to be with the family. Yep, it’s the right thing to do. I’d be crying just thinking about coughing that piece up.

Good luck to you sir.

Yeah, it’s gonna be hard to give it up but I certainly will.

its very rewarding to retuen stuff to the families..last year i got a box of letters from a american seaplane pilot in france ww1. found his grandkids and returned them...in return a few weeks later 3 bottles of high end vodka were sent to me...great find!!!

That is one awesome find. It would be interesting to try to track it back to his family today, but would be no easy job doing that.

vpnavy, that is a ton of info already. It should help him get it back to the family. You are the MAN!

That WW1 ID is really super cool. With the info available you probably can return it or the family. A return like that is worthy of a newspaper article at least. I am sure there is quite a story to go along with that piece of history.

Great job and good luck with whatever you choose to do. :icon_thumright::icon_thumleft:

Hell of a find, congrats! Cool of you to try to get it back to the family. I have my grandpa's trench knife, love it.

Super day finding history.Congrats :icon_thumleft:

That is a heck of a find! WW I, military, local history and a cool silver coin all rolled into one. Personally, I think it's a banner find. And of course I am extremely jealous! :laughing7:

I did a little research last night on his family. His son, who died in 1970, actually lived on the same road I currently do.

Were you able to see if he had children? I found a pruett on Facebook that lives there in town and I’m gonna send him a message. There seems to be a bunch of pruett and even more Pruitt’s.

Bet if you got on Ancestry.com and did a little bit of research...you would probably be able to find some relatives that are still alive...another one would be findagrave.com

banner where i sit good job
